Choose your Username.  For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either).  Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

So happy to have found this site!! My daughter went to MEPS last week. Because of COVID, we were not allowed to go. She sent me a text saying she was swearing in and that she was assigned a mechanical job. I was confused because initially she was looking at the Air Force and the recruiter told her she could come home after MEPS to discuss jobs with him and with us before selecting. My bad for not checking to see if the Navy was the same! After reading the description (GSM) I really can't imagine she would be happy with this job. I don't think they explained everything to her, and she is not sure what other jobs she qualified for.  I understand she is 18, but I feel she was taken advantage of and not given good advice. She picked 8/24 as date to leave for boot camp. We are meeting with her recruiter this afternoon, any advice?? 

My son enlisted in the USMC 10 years ago so I have been through this before. Overall that recruiting experience was exceptional.

No doubt I am responding to this after your meeting with the recruiter. I hope that went well.

The rating is only part of a sailors job. There is a lot of (not very glamorous) work they all do. Too, every sailor is a firefighter, every sailor does damage control, and first aid.

It may be hard for you to imagine her being happy with GSM, but then a typical 18-year-old is still feeling out who they are, so it is may be hard for her to imagine the possibilities. So it isn't so much about being happy with a particular job, but the job being a venue for growth and development. She is the right age to try something really different, and young enough to change course later. Imagine her in just 4 years: a smart, capable woman with grit, resilience, and money in the bank, with veteran's benefits to start the next phase of her life if she so chooses. Not only that, but she will be able to Read The Fine Manual and get things to work. I told my kids that is one of the life skills that can prevent long-term unemployment: people will walk through fire before they will read the instructions.

After meeting with her recruiter, even he was confused as to why she wasn't even offered a phone call to discuss with him or given more detailed information. Luckily he was very open to trying to find other options for her. We will hopefully have more information today.

Shoosh any update on your daughter's rate?  I noticed you had joined the BC Mom group and I posted a message on your My Page as well. 

Hi, yes! She was able to switch to OS, which we all feel much better about. Her brother was a mechanic in USMC and he did not want that for his baby sister lol. It wasn't easy but she stayed strong and got what she wanted.

Glad she found a rate she's happy with!
