Hi,

I've been contemplating going the Navy reserves for some time now.  I'm a married and we have one kid.  I'm 33, so no spring chicken.  I have an undergraduate degree and work full time.  In order to advance professionally I need to go to graduate school.  So I'm interested in the education benefits.  But I'm also interested in the intangible benefits I might get from joining the navy.  I can't think of a better way to say it, but I think it might give me skills I need to command room during a presentation and skills to needed to manage people.  So, that's what I want.

I've done mega research on-line.  But the only ex-navy women I know were full time and enlisted soldiers.  I think their experiences would be very different from mine.  So I'd love to speak more to anyone who might know a little bit more about the process (personally would be awesome).  Also, I spoke with a recruiter but was un-impressed by the lack of specifics he could give and I've been told by several people not to believe a word they say.

Any advise/suggestions/comments from real people with real experiences would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

My husband and both our children are in the military.  The educational benefits from military service are great.  You should try looking into the National Guard and the Air National Guard.  They work basically the same as the reserves in that it is one weekend a month and another 2 weeks during the year.  The National Guard and Air National Guard will go to Army boot camp or Air Force boot camp respectively.  They are run by each individual state.  The National Guard and Air National Guard guys can deploy with the Army or Air Force.  My husband says to everyone who is thinking of joining the military to talk to all the recruiters and see what they can offer you.  My older son was looking into the National Guard at one point and the Air National Guard offered him a $20,000 signing bonus so he went Air Guard.  Oh maybe you should talk to another Navy recruiter, just like with every profession there are good ones and bad ones.  Oh last thing, make sure everything that was promised to you is in the contract before you sign it, as some recruiters will promise you the moon.

Good luck with whatever you choose!  I hope I helped.
