Hello! I'm in the DMV. :-) To be precise, the Columbia, MD area (Ellicott City). I'm in Herndon, VA frequently, which of course isn't too far from you.
I also joined the Group 'Maryland Moms' (I think that's the title). I'll double check. Anyway, it's another Group to more easily find Sailor families in our area.
Feel free to reach out any time. I have four kids, but only one son. Although I knew this day would come, it doesn't make it any easier. He just left on Jan 15th. I am anxiously awaiting to hear his voice again.
Take care. Remain strong.
Thanks for reaching out. I live right next to Dulles Airport, but work in DC. My son is a depper right now. We're waiting for a date for BC. Best of luck to you and let me know when you get the "I'm here" call and the box. I'll look into the Maryland moms group too.
Happy Friday! Well, I received "the box"...aka "kid in a box" on Wednesday. It was delivered via Fed Ex. I got the sense the driver knew how 'sensitive' the package was because he triple checked the address along with asked my adult daughter (28 y.o.) for her name. That actually meant a lot to me.
My 3 daughters were anxious to open the box. I was a bit reluctant since I wasn't 100% certain what to expect. Nor was I emotionally ready at that exact moment. However, I was outnumbered 3-to-1. :-) He wrote his first and last name rather large on top of the box, so I was very careful to not just rip the box open. I wanted to preserve everything about "the box." Anyway, the box contained literally everything Jamal was last wearing as a civilian, plus his military processing papers.Oddly, I wasn't overcome with emotion by the sight of his clothes, but from my son's scent. That's when the tears wanted to flow...until my cat jumped in the box. LOL! It was hysterical. The look on her face was "I smell my favorite human, but I don't see him in this box!"
Funny how a plain brown box can contain something that's absolutely priceless!
Now, I wait like a child at Christmas time for his first letter and a phone call. :-)
Yay!! How wonderful for you!! I can picture it all - even the cat jumping in the box.
Greetings - I live in Frederick and have a son who is in his 4th year (I think) in the Navy. He is stationed in Kings Bay on the Wyoming. My husband is also former Navy also stationed at Kings Bay. Feel free to reach out anytime you need to. I remember seeing my sailor the day he graduated from BC. It was very similar in Chicago to the weather we are having right now. I was so proud of him and still get goose bumps when I see him.
Sometimes this world seems so small. My husband works at NIST and he said they got a new guy who started this week. He said this guy attended Nuke school our son in Charleston, SC a couple years ago. Who would imagine that someone who went to school with my son would end up working with my husband - several states away. Where is you sailor stationed?
This is definitely a small world. My mom works near NIST. When my dad was in the Navy, we lived in La Maddalena in Italy when I was in early elementary school. Fast forward 11 years later and I ended up in Camden County, GA (Kings Bay) graduating from high school with 2 classmates that also went to Vista Mare in La Madd at the same time as me.
My future Sailor is in DEP. We're waiting on a date to sign his new contract and get his new date for RTC.
In addition to this website, I joined the closed groups, Virginia Navy Moms and Navy for Moms, Facebook groups. I found another mom in Fairfax, Virginia.
Also, now have a date for when my son heads off to RTC - August 19. I've gone on the shared calendar at work to stake claim on the days around when he leaves so no one else tries to take off at the same time. ;)
