I just talked to my son and he told me that he chose the Montgomery GI bill, which will cost him $1,200-$1,500 over the next year. Everything I'm reading seems to point to the Post-9/11 GI bill as a better choice. Does anyone know if he can switch plans while he is still at boot camp? He PIRs on 9-12-14.
Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

Its tough to make a choice this early, so your Recruit is covering all the bases. He will be paying into the MGIB, but the Post 9/11 Bill will still be available to him. The real choice will come much later when he actually cashes in on his benefits.
The MGIB pays out a fixed amount while the Post 9/11 amount is based on the in-state tuition of the most expensive state university in the veteran's state of residence. So pay outs can vary wildly from state to state. Some state schools have a lower tuition for Vets. Some private schools are part of the "Yellow Ribbon" program and pick up the difference between tuition costs and Post 9/11 limits. Lots of other factors. Not an easy choice. And impossible to say which is best while only starting boot camp.

In the meantime, plant the bug in his ear to take full advantage of educational benefits while on active duty. By the time my daughter leaves active duty next year she will already have her bachelors degree in hand, paid for by Navy.
Thank you for this information. It is very helpful. Best of luck to your daughter. Is she are CT? My son is going to train as a CTR. I'm really excited for him. Again, thank you!
I want to second CryptoDad's recommendation on taking advantage of the educational benefits while STILL on active duty. If your sailor gets most of his/her educational requirements out of the way, what is left can go towards a graduate degree. Good luck to you and your son.
