My daughter is being discharged from bootcamp due to a catarac's the doctor's knew about at MEPS
My daughter had been at boot camp for a week Tuesday when she called and said she was being discharged due to her cataract in her eye. Its a medical discharge. The Doctors at MEPS knew about her cataract and said it was not bad enough to disqualify her. I spoke to her eye doctor who was surprised they think it’s bad enough to kick her out. The doctors at boot camp told her she could not rejoin even if she has it fixed, it’s a simple 10 minute procedure and completely healed in 10 weeks. I called her recruiter who said she should be able to rejoin and he called MEPS and they said she should be able to rejoin. I feel so bad for her because she had been planning on this for the last year, quit her job, prepared for it physically. She said she hated book camp so far but was handling it fine. I was only able to talk to her for 20 minutes and she said she could call everyday. That was 2 days ago and I have not heard from her since. She said they put all the people who quit boot camp or get discharged for medical in the psyche ward and she was with patients who are mentally disturbed. I don’t know who to go to get answers.

If thats the case, then why didnt they tell her this at MEPS and let her spend a week at bootcamp and now shes in limbo in a not very pleasant place. The doctors at MEPS should of caught this. Very frustrating- thank you for the info!

lolly - I totally agree with you. The MEPS doctors are overworked and underpaid. They do mess up and let things slide that shouldn't. They are only the 1st step in poking and proding the recruits. Everything is double checked at bootcamp. They redo the color blind test, they do another dental check, they do more hearing tests. They make sure the recruit is not only ready for boot camp, but also ready for the Navy.
Again, I too wished they would catch 100% of these problems at MEPS, but sadly they don't.

Well when she called today she sounded better. She has her meeting monday to find out how she is discharged and when she comes home. I am so proud of her for going, everything happens for a reason right! Thank you all for the advice and info.

My son went to ship 5 for a headache he suffered he has been there for more then two weeks now he sounds depressed the more time he spends there because they have some there who are i guess problems...he has boy in there who he says is prejudice and mean, and I sent him another calling card, I hope everything works out for your daughter. God Bless.
they will not answer your questions if you call or email.

I talked to my daughter tonight, she meet with legal, shes gother discharge paperwork done. She can come back in 1 year if she gets her eye fixed and has clearance form her eye doctor. She sounded good but said she was feeling trapped, she cant wait to come home. They told her 10-14 buiness days form today. She said many people are very depressed and its hard to be there. They cant go walk around. They have to stay in the barricks.

lolly - If it is true that she can come back in one year, then she has to make sure she gets a RE-3 discharge code. If she gets an RE-4, then she will never come back into the Navy, nor any other service.
Have her challege them if they try to issue an RE-4 code on her. She must get an RE-3. Extra time now, will save countless hours of frustration later....

She got an RE-8, she said she could come back in 1 year with a note from the eye doctor stating her eye was corrected. She comes home Monday!!!!

Yeah! Shes home, going to go to college so when she goes back she can go in as an officer. She was gone a total of 3 weeks, 1 week transit + bootcamp- 2 weeks on ship 5.

lolly - Wow, that is great she got an 8 (kind of rhymes). Most the time they try to give them a RE-4 which never will let them get into any service. The manual you wanted to see is the offical Navy recruiting manual. Located at this web address. http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/publications/1130.8H.htm
Look at Volume 4 (on the far left hand side). Go to page 201 of this 230 page manual.
Lastly, congrats on you daughter getting an RE-8. That rarely happens. Did she have to push them to do that?
