While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

My son has a college degree and ENLISTED? Is he nuts?
My son leaves for bootcamp next week. I am soooooooooo upset. I was wondering how many others have children that have a college degree and enlisted? My son is going into Nuke. I am hoping to hear success stories! Please share with me....

ChrisAmo, Hi, I just popped into this discussion & saw your post. My son did 3 yrs of college & was doing very well but had always wanted to be in the military, so instead of finishing that 4th year he enlisted in the Navy with a SWCC contract & just graduated boot camp 3 wks ago. We tried to encourage him to be an officer but he said the same thing your son did about getting more respect by going enlisted. Since I've become a Navy Mom and been a part of N4M I've learned an awful lot & met Mom's with son's like yours & mine! p.s. Great pic! : )

The best EMO I ever had was prior enlisted. He was a great officer anyway, but he had also done our jobs and knew what we needed, what we were capable of, and what was BS we didn't need to be doing. He stuck up for us, which meant we'd do anything for him.

Our story is very similar. Our son is at boot camp now, PIR on 11/5. He earned his college degree--always wanted to go military, but I (mom) was insistent about earning a degree first. I wanted him to make sure he had a choice and his military dreams were based on more than Xbox games. Now, after almost two years in DEP, he's on his way and we're behind him 1000 percent because he's going after his dream and he's happy. In the end, I had to accept that my son's life is his to make and at 25, even though he's my "baby," I have to trust his plan and let go. The letting go part is not easy, but it's getting better every day. When we hear him talk about his plans, he just beams--he was outrageously pumped whenever he came home from a PT or DEP meeting--in my heart, I knew it was right. Glad to find a group where our story is the norm--helps a lot! Like many of you, our son also believes in learning from the bottom up so that as a leader, he can lead by example. Pretty solid plan, I think. Hang in there!

I think it sounds like your son is making a pretty good decision. :) My boyfriend is a Nuke, and even though the schooling is tough, it's been really great for him. He did one year of college before he decided that he wanted to do something more and get rid of all that debt that was already stacked up. He signed Nuke, went to boot as an E-1, graduated as an E-3 (as all Nukes are guaranteed), and finished A school as an E-4 (Also as all Nukes are guaranteed when they graduate). In Aaron's rate (EM) he's been told that 80% of the guys get E-5 before they get out to the fleet. If your son has a college degree and is super motivated, I'm sure he'll thrive in the Navy. He can always put in an Officer Package and go that route if he wants to after he's seen the inner workings of the Navy.
Meanwhile, the other ladies are completely right. There are so many college graduates out there today that are sitting on their bums because they can't get a job, or they're flipping burgers somewhere (not that that's all that horrible, but with a college degree I'd be pretty upset doing that). Once out of the Navy, your son will have years of experience in the Navy nuclear field, AND he'll have that college degree. Plus, as others have pointed out, he can continue his education in many ways while he's enlisted.
I've heard it said before that the Navy is what you make of it. Or that you'll get as much out of the Navy as you take.
I'm sure your son will have a great experience. You should head on over to the Nuke Moms group where there are TONS of amazing people. I'm here if you have any questions. I'll do my best to answer. :)

Hey Aaron's girl...my son's name is Aaron..perhaps the Navy and Nuke is in the name? HA! Anyhow..thanks for your post. My son is going into bootcamp as a E-3 and is an extremely motivated kid. I am sure he will do well but..I still am sad. Thanks for sharing some info about your bf and how he is progressing now. I too hear Nuke is hard (he's up for the challenge) and those who survive are generally successful. My son believes the the Navy is what you make of it and he plans on making the most of it. He too believes he will get as much out of the Navy as he can take as weel.
Thanks for the encouragement that he will have a great experience and I will certainly join the Nuke Mom's group.

My son is in boot camp now and is scheduled to graduate 10/15 (if he passes the running). He's been floundering around since HS graduation. He has a total of about 3 yrs of college in 3 different schools and has had a couple of different jobs, though none in the last year or so. He's extremely strong in math, physics and anything computer related - super high SAT schools and aced his AP classes in HS in those areas. But he just can't seem to get motivated to do anything. So far he sounds really happy in the navy - you have no choice but to stay motivated once you are in. I had all of the concerns that you are expressing. I can't say that he is a success story at this point, but I think he will be well suited to Nuke school if he sets his mind to it. Good luck to all of these kids. (

Hey Davidsmom..yes..a success story for you so far..for sure. I am sure David will do fine. He WILL pass the running! You know he can do it..he does too! I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers that he passes and finds Nuke school a perfect match for him! Good Luck!

My son leaves for bootcamp next week too and is also going into Nuke. He doesn't have a college degree as he just graduated from high school this year. I am just so very proud and excited for him. :)
