While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

My son has a college degree and ENLISTED? Is he nuts?
My son leaves for bootcamp next week. I am soooooooooo upset. I was wondering how many others have children that have a college degree and enlisted? My son is going into Nuke. I am hoping to hear success stories! Please share with me....

College degrees are a dime a dozen, when i went to college some 30 yrs ago, you could get somewhere with a 2 yr degree, and now a 4 yr degree is nothing but really expensive. And then its no guarantee you will even get a job in your field. I realize I only have an Associates degree. but I know I worked hard for that. BAck then what you pay now for 1 college credit hour. I paid for an entire yr. I did college, got my AAS degree in Human Services, worked for a bit, then went to career school for Dental, then went into the Army Reserves. Did fine until I got to basic. Couldn't fire the M16 to save my life, much less anyone elses' But it wasn't part of my job description to have to do that. However it held me up and got me Honorably discharged.. All I wanted was to get to Texas so I could go to DT school...( Dental Tech school).I did get to work at the VA hospital in Albany NY for 5 months, one weekend a month... My mom wasn't thrilled that I joined.. She didn't believe it was suitable for me to be in the military....I think she felt I couldn't do the physical aspect of it...So I got it in my head I couldn't do it... I wish I had 1/2 the support back then that I gave my son when he went in the NAvy in' 06.. But back then there was no Army for MOm's, not that we had a computer. but maybe if she had the means, she would have been more supportive of me. My college degree got me E-3, if I had a college degree for dental instead of the 16 month diploma, I would have gotten in on a higher rank. But it wouldn't have matter'd.. College degrees are nice, don't get me wrong, but they are just a piece of parchment paper. NAvy is so much more than that.. The experience you get, the places you can go, the things you can do, and yes there is that enlistment bonus.. I never saw mine.. Because I didn't get out of basic then to school, I got NOTHING
I think in order to get an officer's rating, he needs to go to OCS.. But there will be no GunneryDrill Sgt Foley....No "MAyo"
Yes, Richard Gere was awesome in the movie.... and the other guy was a wimp to give up like that.. He did recognie the fact that everything he did was for his brother Tommy... And Beverly D'Angelo's character was out there because she wanted her pilot. But I don't care what anyone saids Lou Gossett jr was great as the drill Sgt. At first I thought MAyo was going to be another pretty thing to look at, but he muster'd up in the end, proved he could do it, then went to get his Girl
Trust your son's decision. Yes, you are going to miss him, and yes you may not want him to go.. sending him off to college was easy like you say.. but this is BIG.. You are not alone.. all of us mom's have been in your shoes at one time or another. My son dropped out of college the year before he would have graduated. to do what he's wanted to do since he was just starting high school.. join the military He wanted the hands -on stuff, book smartness wasn't for him. the NAvy will give him all he needs to succeed if he gives it his all.. and when he graduates.. he will look so much better in a uniform than Gere' ever could. because he will be confident, and strong and have the world at his feet. You can do it Mom.. You are one of us now, we are hee for you. Hug him, send him on his way, then come vent with us. Join your son's PIR group. That a group for mom's of sailors all graduating on the same day. we have groups for all your interests..we will support you, laugh with cry with you, and when he graduates . w will celebrate his success. It will be fine, and while you are waiting for him to graduate, come see all of us in the various groups.. Spread your wings. You are about to go off on an adventure as A NAvvy Mom. Its a blast.. .. You will laugh and you will cry, but trust me, your life will never be the same... it will be BETTER

The nuclear power program is ELITE! It's one of the most respected divisions in the Navy. No, your Son is certainly not nuts. My son did the same thing! Although one small brush with the law kept him out of the Nuke program. My Husband retired as a Nuke, and we are very secure. He had a great career and is never out of work.
I thought it was nutty at first too, but honestly EVEN with a degree there are NO JOBS. My son is going to be in I.T. which he is much more suited for anyway. This will all turn out well and you will understand more as he goes on. Also, is he is debt??? My son paid ALL of his loans off and is living quite nicely. In this economy I am telling you he couldn't have made a better decision. Stop being upset and support your son!!!! I would love to hear how he does..keep in touch. My name is Patty.

Patty..thanks for the encouraging response. My baby leaves today...gets sworn in tomorrow then off to Great Lakes. I still am going to try to talk him outta it today! Kidding..he is very excited and positive this is for him. I hope so! No..he is not in debt..which is why I really wanted him to just go to Grad School but..this is what he has always wanted to do. I will TRY to stop being upset (have been crying all night and morning so far..urggg) and show him total support when I drop him off at his recruiters today at 2pm EST. I will keep you posted. I am positive it will all be ok. Once he gets out of BC..he goes to Charleston, SC for school for a few years so...I keep telling myself its like when I dropped him off at college...right? URGGGG. I can do this! OMG..I am such a MOM!

PROUD you should be..and I am too. Just hard to see him go I guess. I am a bit disappointed he enlisted BUT...I would be just as sad to see him go....regardless of Officers School or not. Its hard to lose my child I guess? I will suck it up and support the hell outta him...and be PROUD..just like you are! Thanks for slapping me in shape a bit?!? I ordered my US Navy Mom sweatshirt today! I am on it!

My son has a college degree and has just finished MEPS, and is waiting for a job assignment. I am absolutely thrilled as I feel he will learn more about the Navy and life than in OCS. He is excited and is considering the Navy as a career. My feeling is that if he is happy, I am happy. He must make his own life no matter how much I and my husband will miss him. He is our only child.

You are right! If my child is happy..I need to be happy and is very excited and happy soooooooooo when I drop him at the Recruiters today at 2pm EST..and watch him swear in tomorrow at 11am EST...I will be proud and supportive! Good luck to you son as well. WE can all do this together..right?!?!?!?!

Thank you for the post. Well he was sworn in today..and on a plane by now. I looked at all those kids (5 were Navy and the other 15 or so were Marines or Army) and seen such YOUNG children. All looked excited though and I did not CRY till I got back in my car. Fought the tears for my son and wished him well. Ahhhhhhhhh now let the fun begin!

Hi NavyMom2,
Congratulations to your son and you.
From what my husband (veteran) tells me. Your son will have more respect from his fellow sailors than they will for most officers. Why? Because he will advance through the ranks rather than just become an officer right off.
And a better leader knows what his men/women have gone through if they walk a mile in their shoes.
Be proud of your son on his decision.
