Choose your Username.  For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either).  Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed.  Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.

**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.

**UPDATE 7/29/2021** You now must be fully vaccinated in order to attend PIR:

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

My son is still in HS--goes to MEPS this week, what can I expect?

I'm not completely sure what to expect here, I wasn't aware that he would be sigining his letter and taking his oath this week.  I thought he would do that at the end of his DEP, is that not correct? 

 

Just looking to find out what to expect.  He will leaving for boot after graduation--which is in May.

No, first time out.  Apparently they are changing software? So he will go the first week of May.
If this is his first time to MEPS then he will take the ASVAB and get his physical. If all goes well with that then he will meet with a counselor who will let him know what rates he qualifies for and which, if any, are available. He signs a contract then and gets sworn in. Then he gets sworn in again when it is time to leave for boot camp. You make is sound like he has already been before. Has he?

No, first time.  His recruiter told him that he scored so high on the ASVAB they gave at the high school he wouldn't have to take it again, is that even a possibility?  I'm trying not to be a smothering mother, but at the same time I don't want him taken advantage of and getting a rate he doesn't really want just because "he's a kid".

Maybe you can google the local meps in your area. They will have alot of links to different topics. I remember reading something related to your question as to whether he will take it again at meps. Was it the actual asvab or the short version that you take at the rcruiting office on your first visit?
If he took the ASVAB at school that sure does count. His recruiter knows what he is talking about. Then he will just go through the physical and meet with a job counselor. He will tell him what is available and what he qualifies for and pick a rating. Let us know how it goes. Make sure he looks at all the rating and have him take a list of 10 jobs he could see himself doing. Hopefully, one of them will be open and he can get a rate he will enjoy.
That happened to my daughter. Weere told she would not sign a contract or get sworn in. I was concerned b/c she was just 17.  Off she went and the next day I got a call from her sayig I was a parent of a USN Salior. Her step-father and I were horrified. Best advice I can give, go through ALL the rates etc, set up a plan, a backup plan and a backup to the backup plan. Whatever he signs, IS HIS JOB!!!!! Weweretole she could change jobs before bootcamp ---  ahh no, she got screwed. Although she is happy with her choice, she wanted to come to it on her own though an educated though process and feels like the recruiter withheld information.  Understand she would have joined the NAVY regardless, but on her terms.
