Sorry if this does not make any sense, I am not very good at writing. I have some questions about the process of getting married in the Navy. Any information would be helpful. Thank You.

I am 24 and my boyfriend is 26. We have been together for 5 years now and have talked about marriage even before he decided to join the navy. My boyfriend is in New london, CT for sub schooling. He is probably going to be there for about a year until he gets his new orders. We would like to get married as soon as we can.

I live in PA so it is difficult to be so far away from him. He is planning on taking some leave around christmas to come home and visit. We figured that we would get married then. Just a very small wedding.

Anyway here are my questions.... If we get married in PA in december, what paperwork needs to be done to show that I am his wife? Can I move to CT with him right after we are married? Are there steps that we need to take before we get married, like marriage counciling?

Any information would be helpful! Sorry for it being so long and maybe confusing.

Since he is in school, he should talk to his chain of command about what his specific school command requires.  They may want him to go to a few classes, they may not since it will happen over Christmas.  Many sailors marry over the holiday, so it will not be a unique situation.  He should ask right away, and of course, be prepared for someone to say getting married until after deployment is a bad idea.  It isn't for everyone, just know he'll hear negative things and  have to deal with that.

He takes your information (marriage certificate, birth certificate, SSN card) to PSD and they add you as a dependent and enroll you in DEERS, start your health insurance, and so on.  That only takes a few hours when he can get to the office.

Your housing allowance (BAH) will take a few pay cycles to kick in.  The Navy will not pay to move you to CT; but you can move yourself there (start saving every penny, and I do mean every penny).  He will have to submit a request to live off base with you.  I very much doubt you'll qualify for base housing (student sailors often do not).
