on my son's contract it says professional apprenticeship career training (PACT) program... when he was at meps, he got a list of jobs that he qualified for and he picked mass communication specialist. but it does say that on his contract.. he was told by his recruiter that after he complete boot camp he would start internship in multiple  jobs then pick one off the list he was given.. so i'm guessing the the job he thought he  pick wont be guaranteed and in the pact program he would probably be chipping paint. he got a 50 on the asvab on his first try.. ( knowing him, he didnt study at all for this test and should have taken it over to get a higher grade). he told me he was  in a rush to speed up the process so he could  leave. ive noticed that he is not the best test taker, he is more of the hands on type. my question for you guys are i wonder why he was asked to pick a job if his contract was going to be open..??? can anyone give me some insight on this? is the pact program really a bad thing? i  taught my son to take the worst job and make it my his... ive been reading a lot of bad things about the s-pact program.. will it be hard for him to get out of it and find a rating? or will i be stuck in this program for his enlisted years? he doesn't leave for boot camp until June 12... can he get a rating before hes shipped out?

He can do what is called a DAR to try and change ratings before he leaves...but odds are that won't happen.

The pact program is an undesigned program, meaning he doesn't have a rating/job and doesn't go to an "A" School.  He will finish bootcamp either go across the street if he is an S-PACT or E-PACT for a few more weeks of training, or if he is an A_PACT he will fly to FL the day after PIR.

He has to be on board his ship for a year before he can try to get a school. OR he has to be up for E4 to request to take a test for a job...but both of those are request and he will only get what the Navy needs...not always what he wants to do..the list he was shown at MEPS will not be the same list he gets to pick out of for either a school or for taking a test.  There is a lot more to it..but that is the basics of it.

Professional Apprenticeship Career Tracks (PACT) Program may help you.

You may wish to join the group, DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in June . You will meet others with loved ones leaving that day/week who may be in the same TG and have PIR together. Be sure to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for the RTC. I also suggest you join Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) and New Members Stop Here and check out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) and Discussions there.

Your future Sailor may want to join http://www.navydep.com to learn the ins and outs from the DEP point of view. Craig runs that and will steer him to some good links on there.
