My husband just joined the navy and he is currently in bootcamp. After he graduates he will be going to Florida. I was wondering how long it will take for me and our son to be able to go live with him and how does on base housing work? If anyone is married to a sailor in Pensacola,Florida it would be great to know a little more about it. I live across the United States so it is going to be a really big move for our family. I am very nervous and excited at the same time. Any information is greatly appreciated =)

Try Hotpads.com, Trullia and Zillow. Ask the local Navy people if someone could give you just a brief summary of the areas (the good, the bad and the ugly). Most big apartment buildings will have their own application form. Most owners of smaller buildings will use an application form from the local or state Department of Real Estate. Maybe someone can get you the form. You should prepare a "tenant" package to hand out to landlord with a cover letter summarizing who you are, why you are seeking for a place to live. If you can get a letter of recommendation from your current landlord right away - that would be great. If you have bad credit, you should get a report asap and try to get some "old" stuff off the report and write explanations of some of the negative points (eg. forgot one payment on a revolving charge from Sears, etc.). You should block off your social security number until you feel comfortable with the landlord or his representative (an agent or the management company).

Thank you for the advice. The cover letter is a really good idea. Do you know where I can get a credit report at?

You can get your credit report from each of the 3 credit reporting companies at https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.  I check my report every 4 months--once from each company and that way I can keep on top of any problems.  If you find an error on one, order all three.  It's free once a year from each.

You can get your credit score for free at http://www.creditkarma.com/ so there is no reason to pay to get it.

loved reading this! my hubby grads 4/29 and will be on our way to Pensicola. He is AT but was planning on trying out for Air Rescue Swimming in boot camp if he could get a waiver, but did do it after talkig to the Navy Seal Cordinator there because he told him that they really dont want them to bring their families with them for the training! In his letter he goes "screw that!" I cant go that long without you guys!" Hopefully yall get it all worked out! We are waiting if me and our son will be moved down!

Yah they told my husband that too but we moved here anyways. They can't control what I do so I decided to move here no matter what. we still get the BAH to pay for everything. After he finishes up his first set of classes he can live with me  on the weekends and he can put in his request to live off base soon. There's ways around it and just as long as you do not get in the way of their training everything is fine. Sounds like your husband just graduated yesterday from bootcamp. Congrats! It really is a special time. When will you be moving to Pensacola?

Hello CC- we moved from there last year to the east coast.  My Son is currently in bc & FL after for A school.  I hope you and your family are doing well.  I don't miss the fat sea lions but man we miss the Smith River!!! Best of luck to you- nice to see a pic of the lighthouse on ur icon-
