How do you all cope with this, I did not do well. My 23 year old son graduated college with honors and off to the Navy he went. Do not get me wrong so proud of him, however I have experieced alot in my life; death, spouse having a transplant, financial ups and downs but this was up there emotionally for me when my son left, for days I cried and could not talk about him without crying. The lack of communication is so hard, just one letter from him and 4 weeks now. I have written just about daily. He seems fine, it is me - Help from anothe mom I would so welcome ~

my 22 year old left college and joined the Navy.  I cried too in the beginning (before he left) and off and on while he was gone BUT I feel like my job title changed somewhere in there from "Mama" to "Mom/Friend"  My sailor has been in Goose Creek for a little over a year and I went out in June to visit with him and my DIL and had a blast with them!!!!  Friends hanging out and sight seeing.

Actually, the transition to our "new normal" is pretty amazing so far.  We speak on the phone every 7-10 days for an hour or so at a time.  Our relationship is different now than it was before, but I think it's better.  He had to grow up sometime because he's always been somewhat of a Mama's Boy and I have to say that he's grown up a LOT and I LIKE the man he grew up to be as much as I LOVE the boy.

Hang in there mom!!!

Thank you for your story. I do think our relationship will go to another level or step. The void of him absent from the home will lighten. We were best friends too so double blessed son and friend, I have 3 sons actually....He grads Oct 14th from basis and we are going there, I live in Dallas Texas...He has a desire to hopefully continue to pre buds and Navy Seal, the fear overwhelms me but if that is where he is to be, I have to pray it forward right and support him. Thank you for reply.
When you go to PIR it is so wonderful! I can tear up just thinking about it, seeing them come thru those big doors.   AMAZING!  Good luck to you and him
It will get alot better after boot camp.  My son just graduated and now he is in A school and he has his phone and computer and we can communicate.  In boot camp it is so hard because you can't just pick up the phone and call him and you wonder is he alright and what is he doing.
Hi Judy. It is hard, but time is making it easier. My son gradualtes on Oct. 7. We are getting closer. Letters are starting to arrive every Thursday. That gives me something to look forward to each week. I also love mail day because I know another week has passed and we are that much closer to seeing our new sailor. Hang in there. It is going to be ok. It is especially nice now that I don't cry every day. Hugs to you...
