My daughter was scheduled to ship out of Dallas 3/17/15.   During her final medical clearance, the physician said she couldn't ship because of  2 small blisters, one on each heel. This all happened because her weight was at  the limit and her recruiter suggested she work out and eat very little the 24 hours preceding her shipping.  She didn't have tennis shoes so I went and bought some... she got blisters. Very small.

Per the doctor, she would have to wait a week.   The Navy personnel at MEPs convinced the doctor to push it up a day, so she could keep her job, GM. So, after a week of no shoes and socks, the blisters scabbed and are basically healed.  Returned to MEPs today, same doctor said no, can't ship. Has to wait another week, and pretty much told her, if they aren't healed in a week don't bother coming back.  Really!   Everyone at MEPs really tried to help her, no overturning medical.  What will they do if she gets a blister in boot camp...send her home?  Put a bandaid on it and suck it up.

Aside from the disappointment of not shipping 2 weeks in a row, she lost her job.  She had to take what ever job was available.  She was told she can changed her job at the end of boot camp, but cannot get original job back because of long A school ( 27 weeks) they only have 2 classes year and she misses out by 1 week.

To top this off, we do not live in Texas  ( she joined when she lived there).  She sat in Dallas in a hotel room for 1 week alone, no car.  Her recruiter did buy her some clothes an a little food.  I paid for hotel.  This week, she is flying home for a few days ( less expensive than a week in hotel).  IT has

been  a rough day.

So, after my long rant... what can anyone tell you about changing jobs after boot camp.  I this common, hard to do?  Are they just telling her this to raise her spirits.

I don't have any answers for you, but just wanted to give you a little Navy mom support to help you get through this trying time. Hope everything works out for your daughter and you, and someday this will all be a memory to be laughed at as in  "Remember how it started out so bad and turned out so well?" Hang in there and enjoy having her home for an extra visit.

Thanks for the support.  I know, you are correct someday we will laugh at this.  Frustration got the best of me!

It is very common for future Sailors not to be able to ship if they have blisters or even a small cut or sores on their hands and/or feet. The doctors at MEPS want to assure that the recruits arrive ready to train. At the RTC, if a recruit gets a blister, it will be addressed in sick call. Recruits are able to use mole skin and can even take some with them when they ship to help prevent blisters.

As far as changing jobs in BC or after, it does happen at times, but not often until the Sailor has been in a while.

Check your My Page.

Thanks for your reply. Frustration won out, after two attempts to ship.  All this is out of our control and so unexpected, especially second time around. Plus her disappointment as she lost her job and had to take something she is not happy about. Could be worse, today is all ready looking better!
