     USS RENTZ

3 Females and 240 Males Aboard

We are heading back to sea and sending out love out to the USS Rentz FFG 46.  They are currently assisting the Coast Guard performing drug enforcement off the coast of South America.  They are about midway of their eight-month deployment and ready for some love from home!

We would like to send each sailor a small VHS sized box filled and wrapped as a Christmas gift to be opened on Christmas morning.  If you pack them carefully you can fit eight of this smaller box in a large FPO box.  That is a total of 300 VHS boxes...  are you ready moms??

Pillowcases are a go!  They will have them set out for the guys to choose from on Christmas day.

Remember it is warm where they are- still in the 90 degree range every day!  So there is no need of warm hats or gloves for this group... even Santa will want to slip into his bathing suit for this delivery!

I'm in for 16 individual gifts and will also send a box of handwritten notes/cards from my kids' elementary school!

Postage question...I picked up some of the small video boxes and decided to double check with my postmaster about the cost for military mailing still being about $5.  She said she didn't know since the box didn't have the military printing on it???  I know I saw some large sized boxes the other day that had a place for military addresses, but I didn't think you had to have a specially printed box to get the military rate.  I have never had that before.

She said the she would appreciate ME letting HER know about the need for a special box since she said the P.O. never tells her what's going on.

So, does anyone know if we have to have a box that specifically has miltary info printed on it to still get the military rate???

I know  my Molly Moms will have an answer even in my postmaster is baffled :)

I don't mail each individual box. 8 of the little boxes will fit in a large flat rate box. Sending them individual would be spending $40 for postage instead of $15. (Unless you are only sending 2 of the small boxes.) you can send any size individual boxes but the PO boxes are free :-)
My understanding of mailing to a military address is that the discount is for the large flat rate only and it doesn't have to be the APO/FPO printed box. It can be the plain one or the 'board game' size large box. I've mailed them all with the military discounted price.

MomByHeart, What we have done before is to put the small boxes in an APO/FPO box and then you get the military postage rate. I was told once at my post office that whether you got the military rate depended on the address. An APO/FPO address gets the cheaper rate. But as we all know it depends on the post office!!

Thanks, Kim & Pat.  I think at one time I knew it was only the large box that received the military rate, but since I haven't been able to help out for a while, I had forgotten.  And Pat, you are so right!  Each post office seems to be different.  I can see why if the postmasters have no clue of the current mailing rules like at my post office :)

I don't know if you had me but I'm in for 8.  I just finished packing them and boy it's tough getting them in the large box.  I had to pack it before taping so the box would have some give. I wrote 8 small pkgs on the outside.  Is that ok?

@CruAn I think I included  your 8 but forgot to put your name down, I'm sorry I'll adjust the posting!

Not to sure what you mean about writing 8 small pkgs on the outside?

Yes, it is very difficult to put 8 boxes into the large box!!

LOL I wrote 8 small pkgs on the outside of the large one.  This way they'd know to open it to give out on the holiday. (rather the the whole box for one person) I stuffed all the open areas with small candy canes. I'm not sure what happens when boxes arrive to their destinations. Do they pass them out as one or open them and put the contents on a table to pass by and chose items.  Otherwise one person can get a box of nothing but soap & deodorant.  Just curious ...

Excellent question.  I'm not sure how they distrubute the boxes. I believe Susan said that someone opens up all the boxes and lays out the christmas wrapped boxes the night before Christmas so in the morning their all on a table waiting for them.

Here's our running count of the DVD Boxes

CT Moms   125

WA Moms  48

KimEthans Mom 8

CruAn 8

Jonsmom 30

HuskerFan 16

Did I forget anyone?

If my math is correct (and if it is  boy am I in trouble since by trade I'm a bookkeeper) we are up to 235 boxes!  There is now 250 needed although I read in a message Susan would like to have 300.

WE STILL ARE IN NEED OF 65 MORE DVD BOXES.   ANYONE INTERESTED IN HELPING OUT?

I'm trying to pull some friends together - I will let you know later today - I think I can pick up another 16 - but will confirm with you in a few hours!  Thanks
