My son just started OCS May 15th.  I have only heard from him once and the call was less than 30sec long.  Is this normal?  Does anyone else have family in OCS? Would love to chat with you if you have been through this.

Hi Brenda,

Go to OCS Graduate Mom's Discussions and follow some of the posts there - lots of info. Our son graduated in Dec. and the first call was very short, we could barely hear him and his voice was very hoarse! Best advice I got and followed was to write, write, write. Many family members and friends sent notes and letters too, so he got a lot of encouragement from the outside. It's hard to be cut off from communication, but your positive thoughts and encouraging letters will mean the world to him. How often they can call depends on the drill instructor, but don't expect many calls until he becomes a "candio" (candidate officer instead of officer candidate) in the last 3 weeks, which is when they become the leaders to the newer candidates. Best of luck to your son and hang in there - everyone on N4M is very supportive, helpful and proud of ALL the kids who have chosen this path.

Hi LHR,

Thank you so much for your reply.  I have been writing but he didn't give me his class before he left and I forgot to ask when he called so I am hoping he is getting the letters I am writing. Do you know how I can find out what class he is in other than wait for his next call?

I am so glad to have stumbled upon this group.  Thank you for being there.

Brenda

Hi Brenda,

Just back-tracking from my son's class, I think your son's class might be 14-11, but if you go to the OCS group I mentioned and ask there, I'm sure someone will know. Hopefully, you'll get an answer because it might be a while before you get the next phone call and I think the class # should be on the envelope. Hope that helps. LHR

Hi LHR,

You were right!  class 14-11 is his class.  I got a letter from him yesterday along with all of the letters I had written him.  Guess they don't look too hard for the recipient when there is no class listed.
