It depends on where you are and if you like being surrounded by military families or not. Some young wives find it reassuring.

I was raised in Navy housing, it is much nicer now. it was pretty hairy when I was little.

Many places have restrictions on pets.

As an adult, married and in the Navy myself, we always declined housing and rented instead. The BAH was more than enough to cover our costs and we could choose a place which allowed our three cats.

Base housing is not always on base. It will take all your BAH. Renting, if you can find a place cheaper than your BAH allowance, you can keep what you do not spend. Location is vital when making this decision.

Many housing areas have long waits, while others have practically none at all. San Diego is notoriously long, we chose to just stay in our cute little condo.

Where will you be headed?
we arnt sure we find out before friday from what i understand there's only five places right now that his job can go to so itll be va fl ca wa or hi..
He has to be E-4 or above to take a dependent to Hawaii. It is considered overseas duty.
there are a lot of things to concider when deciding between the two. If you only need a one or two bedroom apt then most the time its better to rent as you wont need all your BAH for that. Need a place bigger then what your BAH can get you then housing is the better option. So much to think about. Utilities and rent together, are they more then the BAH? How much? Couple 100 or just 20-50$? Housing will take all your BAH but it includes utilities, trash, water. You just have your cable, phone ect. However again it just depends on area and whats avail.
my son and daughter in law were in off base housing the first year and are moving to on base housing. more military and I think she wants to be somewhere , where their neighbors are going through the same things as they are when he is deployed. She did really well during that first deployment with only being married a month when he left and in a brand new big town by herself. So as others have said it depends on your situation. Good Luck God Bless and hope you find a wonderful community of people to surround yourseof with.
You may not get a choice- some places have a VERY long waiting list for housing- for example, Norfolk (last I heard a few months back) has a 1-2 year waiting list for enlisted, and even longer for officers.
We do off base and it works out much better because we live under BAH and can use that money for other things. There are plenty of military where we live even though we're not on base!
Do LOTS of reasearch! I'm in the same boat as you right now, looking into different bases but I have 10months before our move. Things you want to consider are Location, how much BAH you will get (go to http://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/perdiem/bah.html to calculate you BAH for that location), also talk to people who live there and see what thier utilities run, also do you have kids or plan on having kids, do you like space? Military housing is made to support big families! My on-base 3 bedroom town home is like 1800 sq ft and has a porch, garage, outdoor storage, lots of storage space inside. I don't have to worry about paying rent or utilities (which as a newly wed that will be nice for you, takes some financial stress away) and I can run my AC at 60 degrees all year long if I want! For my family (which is just myself, my husband, and my 9 month old son) it's 10 times nicer than living in a 900 sq ft 2 bedroom apartment. Our on base house is a true HOME for us, unlike our little apartments we had. I see you had FL as one of your possible places, if it happens to be NAS Jacksonville I have plenty of info for you! If it happens to be another base look up a group for that base and try to talk to some wives for more info. Good Luck! =)
Fl was an option but someone else got it first so we are off to San Diego.. I'm nervous i dnt know why i was more comfortable with the east coast but oh well im sure itll b fine once were settled.. and we decided to do on base housing off base if that makes since the houses are 1500 sq ft and way cheap so we'll still get the benefits of doing off base housing on base only this way they wont take our entire bah..
For CA, I would say do base houseing cause the costs out there are really high out there!
