Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

We are in the process of changing recruiters. The new recruiter says he "can't" even talk to my son until he graduates? (4 weeks away). Have you ever heard of this?

Now that is strange since future Sailors can be in DEP their full senior year of high school.

Now you are having issues with your second recruiter? Are you sure you are asking the right questions? Perhaps the new recruiter does not want to step on the toes of the old one?

We contacted the new recruiter after the first one told us my son had to sign a contract for a rate he didn't want THEN he could take the DLAB test and if he passed they would "tear up" his contract and write him a new one.  We found out this isn't true.  The new recruiter encouraged us to work it out with the old one.  We tried to do this, she became rude and highly offended that we dared check out the information she told us.  She told a couple other lies and we finally decided this wasn't going to work for us. 

The new recruiter found out he was still in high school and told us he "couldn't" even talk to him until he graduates. He also is the one who told our first recruiter we were shopping around after he promised not to.  So I am out of local options, but I am not impressed thus far.

Is there some other questions I ought to be asking?

Gotta say, I am feeling out of touch. what the heck is the DLAB? Did they replace the ASVAB? 

It sure seems to me like something is being left out here. For the life of me, I can't fathom why any recruiter would be telling your son he needs to wait until he graduates. 

The main thing you should know is, until your son does his final swearing in, he has not committed to anything. However, if there are too many issues, they may decide your son is not worth the trouble. Finding recruits does not seem to be an issue at the moment for the Navy.

If it were me, I'd set up an appointment with someone senior, and go with your son to meet this with them in person. Have a list of questions in advance, but first question should be, "why must my son wait until he graduates before talking with anyone?"

If you are not getting appropriate answers, consider another branch. 

FWIW, my son first spoke with the Marines. 

The Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) is for those wanting CTI.

Yup. That is what he wants and doesn't want to sign a contract for a different rate unless he is sure he can't get in.

BTW, rate is the same as rank for other branches and rating means job or occupational specialty. So he is seeking a contract in the CTI rating.

You did it again. You should be saying "He doesn't want to sign for a rating he doesn't want."

Rate is rank (E-1 or SR, E-2 or SA, E-3 or SN).

From my reading they appear to be almost interchangeable. .

Navy.com says, "Your specific job in the Navy is called your rating."

If I have used the Navy grammar incorrectly, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it if we can ever get my son in.
Once the Sailor is finished with "A" School then rate and rating go together to make the rate badge and that is referred to as rate by most.
Yes, you will get it.
