Our son leaves on Nov. 15.  He is very excited & we are very proud.  We are having Thanksgiving on the 13th before he leaves & making it an "anchors aweigh" party also.  I will take any advice on dealing with boot camp.

Boot camp isn't easy, it's not meant to be, but he'll get through it so much better if he's prepared both mentally and physically. My son said one of the hardest parts to get used to was all the yelling the RDC's do at the recruits. He needs to remember not to take any of it personally. They yell at everyone and it's all part of the experience. He should learn to keep his mouth shut unless told to speak. This is so hard for some people but a mouthy recruit irritates the RDC no end and if one thing they don't want, it's an irritated RDC. My boy said they had a recruit in his division who couldn't keep his mouth shut and the whole division was punished for it. They want them to work as a team and the first 3 or 4 weeks they're all over the place, then things finally start to fall into place and it all makes sense to them.

As for you, write him often, tell him newsy stuff from home, NEVER tell him what a basket case you are (even if you are), he'll have enough to deal with without worrying about you. Be endlessly supportive. The first couple of letters you get from him may break your heart......"I hate this, I want to come home" but be strong and encouraging and all will be well. That phone call you'll get after Battlestations when he calls and says "Hi Mom, I'm a sailor in the US Navy!" is the most excited you'll ever hear him. The 8 weeks of boot camp will fade away and it's on to the next stage in his life.

My son leaves for bootcamp on Nov. 23. We had Thanksgiving last weekend. Went to the Iowa game and then dinner. Just like Thanksgiving. Turkey and football. We will have Christmas number 1 in a week.
Hi Jordan's fans - How did it go? My son left on the 15th as well.
Party went great! Got the call last night. Glad he's there and the stress of waiting is over. Now saving for a road trip in January.
what is your son's name & where are y'all from? Would be a small world if they were together!
PLEASE DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR REAL NAME TO ANYONE UNTIL YOU ARE SURE THAT PERSON HAS A SON/DAUGHTER IN BOOTCAMP WITH YOUR SON. PLEASE DO NOT DISCLOSE YOUR SON'S NAME ON THIS SITE. REMEMBER THIS IS A PUBLIC SITE.
USE THE PRIVATE MESSAGING SYSTEM. AVAILABLE IF YOU AND ANOTHER MEMBER ARE FRIENDS.
sorry, didn't mean to cause such anxioty!
my son left that day also. Any word from yours? Ship 07 div 048

We've received one letter and he called last Thursday.  Ship 07 Div 050.  He said that there are screw ups in his div, so their liberty is rationed as punishment.  How is your son doing, Jordan sounds great, he said so far it is not as bad as he was expecting.
