I am hearing some not so great things happening on this website.

They range from cliques to RDC's trolling so they can cause problems for our SR's.

I have decided that I don't need this site like a handful of others I have heard from that have been publicly chastised on this site for posting things as mundane as their child's first name.

This is a sad thing, considering the idea behind it is a great one.  I shall just be smart and stick with the actual Navy Website, my SR's recruiter and my SR for any information I need along with the group I have joined elsewhere that appears to have more knowledge of what is happening due to the fact there are more there sharing without fear of being talked down to or slapped in the face by someone else's words.

Shame on those of you that had less than good judgement in your actions and thoughtlessness in what you placed out in open forum towards other mothers who are just trying to make it through the next day of not hearing from their SR's.

I'm right there with ya Bunker. The "We are so done with this" was my EX husband's favorite escape when he got backed into a corner, KNEW he was WRONG but wouldn't ever admit it. Then he would just turn around and walk away!!!! Ewwwwwwwww makes my blood boil.

Concerned Dad- I usually agree with your posts and enjoy your knowledge. If you don't like the topic....maybe stop clicking on the link??? Just a suggestion.  :-)

It's just that new members come to this site and this thread is at the top. They read it and well, they think you're a big ol' meanie, and I am understanding and compassionate. We can't have that, can we?

Just don't want people to get the idea this place isn't useful.

I'm new here and I sort of know what this thread might be about. My son, who is still getting into better shape to try to join, is 22. He was out of the house for two years at college so I have already been through the "I never hear from him" phase. He's an adult and has been legally since he was 18. I joined this group to find out how things now work in the Navy.

I say now, because I am a bit of a Navy brat. My Dad was active for 6 and reserves for 33 1/2. My brother was in the Navy for 6. I know things have changed a bit since they were in and have already learned a lot, like Great Lakes is the only place for new recruits training. I have learned to expect his personal stuff in a box after he gets there. Maybe this is covered somewhere else, but if he is under a 'phone plan', will the carrier let him drop that due to his joining service? Of course that is a minor thing. Anyway, I'm glad I found this place.

He will have to call his phone carrier and check about having his phone put on "military hold" while he is in BC and also to set it up so that you can call the day before PIR and activate the phone again so that he will be able to use the phone while on Liberty and while he is at A School.  Other than that, he would have to check to see what will be available in his situation with his company.

Our son "suspended" his service for 6 months during deployment. His carrier is Verizon. Just remind your son to be sure he makes his payment once the account is active again.  My son had it suspended for just 3 months once - the account becomes active automatically once the 3 months was up. He forgot about and didn't make his payment. Most carrier if they cancel an account due to non-payment will charge a reconnect fee. We were receiving his mail, so of course, like a good a mommy, we paid it.

Welcome to N4M. Like any volunteer organization, there will be individuals who are not happy with the way things are done. It's just the way it is.

Please browse through the discussions.  Click on on MAIN tab (on the menu bar), check out the "featured" discussion listed in the middle column.  A great deal of information has been explored and written about. It's all here.

Good luck to your son.  Be sure he checks out the NavyDep.com site.

Thank you both. (AT&T...I hate dealing with them)

I will check out the featured discussions as you suggest.

Thanks again.

My Sailor was able to cancel his plan when he was stationed overseas without any penalties.  It seems like he had to fax or email a copy of his orders, but I'm not sure of that.  I know he ended up being transferred within the company and talking to several people before it happened.  He was able to do the cancelation since his orders were for a year.  I'm a little fuzzy on the details since he handled it himself and it's been a while, but I know they kept trying to get him to do a military suspension only.  He referenced the Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act and was permitted to cancel the plan.

I think our son opted to "suspend" because he wanted to keep his phone number - he didn't want to lose contact w all his friends from college.

I think that suspension is the way to go when it will be 6 months or less, but if it is going to be longer, then canceling the plan probably makes more sense. It just depends on the Sailor's circumstances.

Well, it sure looks like we haven't scared anyone away!  :-)

Welcome Natesmom!!

Almost scared me away, but I have remustered the courage to return.

I sure do miss Momma bear.
