I joined several days ago and have been reading all your amazing comments. I can't help but feel so overwhelmed though. The more I read, I realize, the more there is for me to figure out. I've never been so stressed out in all my life! I miss my son so much and can't help but to worry about him. I cry every day and it's not getting any easier. Thinking of him and graduation consumes all of my day. (I think I need a Navy Dictionary for dummies too! ) I don't understand any of the "lingo".

I have so many questions that I know you wonderful women will have answer to. Such as. ...When and where is this Sarges meeting the night before graduation that I keep hearing about? Will my son mail me some information to attend? Do I pick up the graduation tickets or will my son mail them to me? Does my son travel to A school at his own expense? Are the travel arrangements made for him or by him? When should I expect to receive the security clearance form to fill out for us to attend graduation? And I guess I don't know his mailing address to send him letters until I receive a letter from him, right? How do I know what division my sin is in so that I can look for his division and try to sit close at graduation? That's all I can think of in this very moment, but I promise you I'll have a million more questions. I hope I'm not a bother, I'm just so nervous and anxious, and most of all extremely overwhelmed!
Thank you in advance!

((((Hugs)))))  I'm guessing if you haven't gotten the form letter yet, that your son hasn't left too long ago. It'll get less overwhelming with time.

Your SR (seaman recruit - that's what they are called in boot camp)'s division and PIR (graduation) date will be in the form letter. It comes about 10 days to 2 weeks (ish) after the box. And yes, it'll also have his mailing address so you can send letters - start writing now and just mail when you get the address.

Graduation tickets have changed a little since my son graduated so I'll let someone else cover that but I think you pick them up with ID but your son has to name the people who will be attending.

He'll travel to A school at the Navy's expense and arrangements will be made for him. Usually if they are not staying in Great Lakes for A school, they'll fly out the day after PIR.

Sarge's Meet and Greet is the evening before PIR and is not on base nor is it an official Navy sponsored event. It's WELL worth attending though - Sarge is a font of knowledge.

and try to focus on WHY your son joined the Navy and that you've raised a good man who wants to serve his country. Try not to focus so much on missing him - make new memories at home that you can share with him in your letters and be positive in your letters to him - focus on how proud you are of him and how excited you are for him to graduate and move on to the next step in his career.

It's okay to miss him and it's okay to cry but you don't want to let missing him and crying take over - you've done a good job raising him and giving him roots, this is the next step where we let them take wing and FLY!

((((Hugs))))

Thank you so much for responding and so quickly. He left a week ago today. I guess I need to be a little patient and things will fall into place. I am so very proud of him, but I just worry too much.

things will fall into place and you will get less overwhelmed as time goes on and the Navy becomes a new normal for you as well as your son.

Sometimes I think boot camp is as much a learning experience for us as parents as it is for our sons and daughters. They have to learn to be sailors, we have to learn to let go as well as to accept that the Navy does things the Navy's way for the good of Navy not what's best or easiest for the sailor's family.

Because Boot Camp is only the beginning - communication will be better at A school - you'll be able to call and email as well as send letters and they typically do get leave between A school and their first duty station - which is wonderful because we get to see them and hug them and cook for them again but also a little bittersweet because they've changed so much (matured) and the time goes so quickly and then they are gone again and off to their first duty...mine went to Japan after A-school for a 3 year tour - he's been there since Apr 2016 and we're hoping he'll come home on leave next May. But he's loving it and doing great which is what's important!
