Even though your uniform items at boot camp are issued (free), many items are not. Your first night at boot camp you are given a number of hygiene items, shoe polish, sewing kit, t-shirts, PT-Shorts, sun tan lotion, some other miscellaneous items plus $150 Chit book for the Navy Exchange. This will cost you about $450 from your first pay check. A good $60-$80 of that chit book will be spent within the first week buying extra items from the exchange that you'll need for the rest of boot camp (most of it being more shirts, underwear, etc.)

Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

Paying for uniforms
My wife called me a couple of days ago and said that they have to pay for their own uniforms (that the Navy doesn't pay for them), I believe....I was not 100% sure....She also said they were around $800...once again not sure if I understood correctly because it was my one and only phone call since she left for bc about one month ago. Can anyone share some light on this?

A uniform allowance is put in their pay and then taken out as they buy the things they must have for their seabag. They also get a yearly amount to replace pieces. There are others who can explain it better, but it is covered for them.

They do purchase their own t-shirts and socks, and hygiene items, but the uniform items themselves are issued. It can be confusing. The reason they must buy the items through the NEX rather than bring them is to ensure they all have the exact same items and that there is no contraband smuggled in.

Oh ok. I appreciate the insight. So this pay is additional to their regular pay however they take it out of their paycheck as they go....so essientially my wife will not be paying for the uni's....,correct.

That's how I understand it. My Sailor has had a few extra uniform expenses than what was covered at times because of changing duty stations and the requirements being different, but he says it should even out eventually. So, yes, the Navy pays for the uniforms, not your wife. When she looks at her LES, she will see that it went in and came out.
