I have heard nothing from him and have been unsure as to whether or not I should pursue the matter by sending him a reminder email or something?
I know he must be very busy.
I'm sure he is busy, but I'd send an email reminder. just a brief one. I know that when HAE did the USS NY, it took almost a month to get permission and then took about a month to coordinate the delivery.

AND I will say this, even with a crew of 5 women doing the handouts, we are still dealing with the confusion that some didn't get any. Just got a thank you email from a sailor that has transferred off and he got 2!

There is alot to doing this and alot to consider.
can you give me some more info in the project? My sister-in-law and aunt do a lot of sewing and this may be something they would like to be involved in? Just let me know!!! have a great day!
Hi Lynn,
there isn't much to tell as yet. We are waiting for Stephanie to hear back from the guy on the base. I have a page called Heads at Ease and it is a pillowcase project for deployed military.

the Lincoln moms thought it would be fun to do pcs for the ship for Christmas. But you are talking about 5000+ and about $10,000.00. Plus, there are some rules about doing the whole ship, and the strike force group.

It would be a tremendous amount of work. I offered to take care of my son's squadron, but that is all that I can do.

I guess it would have to be broken into units/div/shops etc. Pat, a Nimitz mom, did that strike force group last year. She knows the in and outs of a project of this size. She'd be a valuable person to contac to see what needs to be done.
Let me know what is up....I work full time...but would love to try some of these. I can take them over to port when ever also.
Ladies,
I have heard back from the PAO and he has informed me that he is requesting permission from the Strike
Group Admiral. In order to finish that, he needs to know about how much we think
we would be spending on the pillowcases and how much we think
think a single pillowcase will cost to make, and how many we think we will
be able to produce, and he will then do the rest and get us our permission and possible funding as well.
We do plan on making them for the whole ship and so he said he will figure that number out for me and he just needs to know if we think we will be able to do about 5,000 by christmas.
So ladies here are the questions I need answers to.....

1. How much on average do we expect each case to run?
2. Do we think we can get all done in time for christmas? (about 5,000)
3. Are we ready and sure about this? Is everyone committed and ready to recruit and help others and get this done asap and on time for our sailors?

I look forward to everyones answers.
Thank you very much,
StephanieAlice
I'll sew nonstop, and I think we had it figured out how many cases each one of twenty moms would have to make.So count me in for my 250.I just need funding.
I'm in for 250! Will recruit all my friends here in NY to help out!
Jackie
Stephanie, glad that you finally heard back from him. I was wondering. Please ask him if the other vessels need to be done too.

You need to figure the average cost is $2-3.00. If you are a great shopper, then you can do it for less. My favorite fabric is symphony broadcloth at Joann fabrics. When it's on sale you can get it for $1.59 or so. Then put a fancy band on it and you got it for about $2.00 or alittle less.
If you make pcs out of the whole piece of printed fabric then you are at the $3 range. I am going to post the pillowcase instructions in a new link.
And trust me on this, as I have personally mailed about 2500 pcs since Jan 2009. Make them like the instructions. While the famcy double cuff and flange piece are really nice, they take more fabric and MUCH more space to pack. I can get 37 or more pcs in a large box made "my" way, but only about 30 with all the extra cuff fabric and flange. I'll also post some photos.

One other thing. flannel is great for the ship, but bulky to mail. plus it is usually narrow and needs to be pieced. So 44-45" cotton is the way to go.

I have already been setting some aside for the Lincoln. I will commit to VFA 34, my son's squadron. Then depending on the numbers, could do more.
I will ask HAE to do some also as one of our units that we adopt. I just need a firm commitment from you all because HAE cannot do this whole ship! There was a rumor floating aroung about that, but we cannot.

If the PAO can get some funding, that would help tremendously! Cause we are looking at about $15000 with shipping. This is a huge undertaking, so please pray about your involvment.
Lets get everyone interested in helping to become a member of the group I started and we can get this project up and running.
Thank you ladies for being so patient while I have been working on getting everything ready and approved.
Stephanie
joined the new group so I will check there often to get the details! Now that I know we are a go for sure, I'll start my sewing very soon!!!!
