We had such a great time - and learned so much from Navyformoms.com, that I though we should share what we learned.
1. Out of stress and worry - I gained 20 pounds, and broke out in a horrible face rash. It was for nothing. If your child is physically and mentally prepared, it is a tough challenge, but very doable.
2. Went to Sarge's the night before PIR. It wasn't what I expected. Sarge is wonderful - very personable. But, it was hard to know where to go and to meet up with people you may have met online. We kind of felt like fish out of water. A lot of people seemed to already know each other, and we were uncomfortable, so we left early. We didn't have a problem with the ceremony. Not saying Sarge's is not the greatest, it just wasn't for us.
3. We stayed at the Navy Great Lakes Inns and Suites... $62 per night... no taxes or fees. We had a suite - bedroom, pullout bed for our daughter and a kitchenette. Beautiful view of Lake Michigan, we stocked up on water, snacks and ice cream at the local Walmart. Great view, clean, lovely breakfast each morning, walking distance to the Sam Adams pub on base. Couldn't ask for a better set up. Our son ended up staying with us - he was on liberty for the weekend. Slept with pillows on the floor, but he could have gone back to his barracks if he wanted to.
4. If your child is going to A-school at Great Lakes, stay at the Gateway Inns and Suites - our son was on liberty for the weekend. His room was about 100 feet from ours. You still have to drive to PIR, but they are only there until they graduate. Made it super easy.
5. There is a diner nearby- open 24 hours - The Full Moon. Appreciated the free Thanksgiving dinner, but it was a terrific place to grab a bite any time of day.
6. The time goes so fast - from when they leave until when they graduate. The ceremony was beyond anything we had every experienced. There was nothing we would have changed, or wished would have happened better. It was phenomenal. It is true however, to get there early. Seats filled up pretty fast.
7. Our son was recovering from a cold. I stocked up on medicine from Walmart, but the NEX had better deals and once he got to A-school, we could shop there. Once they get to A-school, the rules are much more relaxed.
