HI everyone,
I have read about the time after PIR until Liberty is over on Friday night and feel good about our day together. Once they go back to their RTC ship, what happens? I am asking because I have seen on some posts that we are able to meet up with our son at the airport if he is flying out the following day to A school. I have also read that the bus leaves from RTC to take them to the airport at like 2am Saturday morning. My questions are this:
1. Do they really leave in the middle of the night just to hang out at the airport?
2. I have a room reserved at the Hilton in Terminal 2 at O'hare...once he arrives at O'hare can we take him there until his flight leaves or is he required to stay in a certain area at the airport?
3. Will our sailor know what his plans are for leaving for A school when we see him after PIR?
Anything you can offer would be greatly appreciated. We currently have a room booked at the holiday inn express near RTC for Thursday night and was planning on spending the day wiht him until he went back for the evening and then head down to the hotel at O'hare for the night. I figure I will be up and ready to go whenever they arrive just to have a little more family time.
As usual, thanks for all your help and guidance!!!
Tracy

lemon, wasn't there an example someplace on here what all to ask on the note card when you send it to your SR? I know that I saw one......because it was important to ask which airport since there are 3 to choose from....I may have saved it on my phone.
My experience with my son was pretty much what lemonelephant described. We had approx. 7 hours with him after PIR, he had to be back at RTC and at his ship by 7pm. Each RDC has their own time frame and the SR's know what's expected!! The bus left RTC at 4am and I met my son at 4:30am at the airport. His flight did not leave until around 10:00am, so we had some quality time with him. You need to meet your son BEFORE they go through security. When they check in, the airline personel will give you a visitor's pass. Be sure everyone in your group has proper ID!! When going through security, you DO NOT wait in line. Go to the front of the line with your Sailor in full uniform with his orders, and everyone in your group skips the huge security lines. The USO area at O'Hare is very nice. It's quiet, there are restrooms, vending machines that are much less expensive than the regular vending machine on the concourse. I was very impressed with the whole experience.
Before each group of Sailors start to check in, they gather as a group to establish what time to muster and where prior to their flight leaving. There were 12-14 Sailors headed to the same A school my son was going to, and they were very organized. The Navy does wonders in the 8 weeks they have to make men out of our boys!!
Thanks so much for your replies! It really helps having the ability to find out the real scoop from all of you that have gone through it before. :-)
GoNavy, your very welcome. I try to reply to posts like yours with the information I would have loved to have. Sometimes it's the little things that make a big difference. RTC changed the entire program regarding when the new Sailors leave for their A school's WHILE my son was in bootcamp. Needless to say, I was NOT a very happy new Navy mom, as ALL of the plans and reservations I had made had to be changed!
We drove to Great Lakes from Washington State. I'm happy to report that everything worked out in the end, but it was a lot of work. Making things easier for other family's is my goal.
question???? for those stayong at great lakes for A-school...do they get fri nite sat sun after PIR for liberty with family...trying to see how long i should stay !!!??? so confused.
I have that same question too, my husbands A school is also in Great Lakes so it would amazing if they are allowed to spend those days with family.
For those staying at Great Lakes for A school...To the best of my knowledge the must report and get checked in right after PIR. This could take as long as 5 HOURS!! Remember...your now a part of the Military...hurry up and wait!
They then have Liberty for the weekend but must be back on base and in their racks every night at a certain time. Your recruit is the best source of information regarding this. Trust me, it beats being at the airport at o'dark early to hang out for hours. But, spending that precious time with my son was worth it!
michelle thank you so much very helpful!
