Can anyone tell me the proper way to announce PIR, and "school" assignment in our locan newspaper?  I'm looking for the proper vocabulary and paticulars that I should or should not share with the public.

Thanks!

An example would be:

John Doe graduated from the US Navy boot camp in Great Lakes, IL on January 10, 2013. Seaman Doe is now attending (insert rate here) A school in (insert city / State here.)

You could also say John Doe, a 2012 graduate of ____ high school, has recently.... Or, Mr. and Mrs. Doe are proud to announce that their son, Seaman John Doe, has recently.....

After they have graduated from boot camp or A school is ok -unless your Sailor is going to do something that's more "hush hush" - Intel work, SEALS, etc. It's best to check school graduations with your Sailor before you announce it. But, generally, graduations (after the fact), promotions, or transfers - usually if they are assuming a command level position such as CO, XO, or CMC, are things that are ok for announcements.

Things like deployment dates both when they are going and when they ate coming home, large troop movements (as opposed to an individual Sailor), etc should not be put in an announcement.

BUT - if you are ever in doubt, you can contact the Public Affairs office of the nearest base or the PAO office at the MEPS and ask them if it's ok. (Or, once your Sailor is out of boot camp and school, ask him to run it by the PAO at his command).
