I am searching for flight+ hotel packages, and want to know the best course of travel...stay near the airport, and get a taxi to PIR, or get a taxi to a hotel near PIR that offers shuttle to graduation?  How early should I arrive, and will my 5 yo daughter be able to attend if she is not on the list?  Any other comments or advice is more than welcome!!!!

Kelly, I would stay closer to the base because the morning of graduation the gates open at 6:30 am and you will need to get there early. We stayed a few miles away, and got there at 7:30 and had to sit in the balcony. There is a long line to drive thru so the hotel shuttle is a good idea. Also children under 12 will not need to be counted as one of your four on the list. If you go to the group Pir on 9/17 /10 which was my sons, there is a slew of info thanks to cathi. You can get directions and everything. kelly the name is now family/friends of sailors who Pired on 09/17/10
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
you are welcome! I hope you find the info on our group site helpful. One other thing , I think it is better to rent a car than to take a cab from the airport, it will wind up being cheaper and you will be able to drive back and forth to the base all weekend to see your sailor and/or drop them off.
hi it will cost you a lot of money for a cab.some rental cars have gps so you can find your way around .the airport is not very close to the base . good luck have fun.
I just returned from my daughter's PIR and we stayed at Residence Inn Mariott - Waukegan - it's about 3 miles from base. It was a perfect location. It was about 1 mile to a Walmart, Starbucks (which my daughter absolutely loved!) and some restaurants. We rented a car and drove to PIR - we got there about 6:10 am and it was perfect timing - there were only about 10 cars ahead of us and we were right in the 2nd row in front of my daughters division so it was perfect timing for a great seat. The bad part was we sat inside for about 2 hours before the ceremony even began but it was well worth it! It gives you a good opportunity to talk with other parents who have family members in the same division since you will all be sitting together. I would recommend renting a car so you can pick up your recruit every day for their liberty and return them each evening when they need to return - then you are free to go where you want during their liberty. We went down to the Aquarium one day and then the last day she just wanted to rent movies and stay in the room and relax and eat snacks! Good luck and have fun - you will absolutely love it!
thanks for the info, guess I will check into that too. I could see my daughter laying around eating junk food also! And we must not forget the white chocolate mocha frappacino! It sounds like a possibly expensive weekend!
I am beginning to tremble at the expense. Anybody know about the option of flying into Milwauke? cheaper and smaller airport. Distance seems the same.
I flew into MKE...easy to get in and out of...easy to get ot RTC as well. Took about 45 minutes, a straight shot.I think I went through one or two tolls. Make sure you have a GPS with address for hotel, RTC, airport, restaurants, etc
you are a saint with your info. thx so much
