Need some advice - son is home now on leave before traveling to his first duty station. He is single, no signifigant other, just me and dad. His banking (deposit of pay and car note) is handled thru Navy Federal Credit Union. I am encouraging him to get a power of attorney taken care of while he is here as we are within a few miles of the Seebee base in Gulfport and I think he would have access to their legal office there to take care of it. Please help me with explaining to him what some of the reasons are for the POA? I don't neccessarily want to be in his business, but in the event something needed to be done while he was out on his sub, or he was injured and we needed info I want to be able to get the info. Sorry so long - just want info to relay without trying to be an overbearing mom. I know some of you have had situations in the past in which you were either glad you had POA or wished you did. Thanks for all the input in advance - Hoppi, do you have any input??

My Navy son always gets me a POA prior to his deployments to Iraq.. this has come in handy on several occasions when Navy Fed fat fingered his account number and all of a sudden they couldnt take out his payments.. I sent in the POA and was able to fix the issue.. When he deployed last time he had just totalled his car and had insurance issues to deal with.. I had to take care of those for him.. and without the POA I wouldnt not have and his credit would have gone into the toilet..

My Army son deployed to Iraq in June and did not do a power of attorney.. stress and training caused him to forget :) I had to fix an issue with his credit card and was unable to do so.. when he came back on R&R his normally 700+ credit rating was at 420 due to this issue.. Fortunately the bank fixed the issue and sent out a letter to the credit reporting agencies as well as a copy to him but this was a simple easy fix I was unable to do because no POA

Not to mention if anything should happen medically to him and he was temporarily incapacitated.. he needs it so you can make medical decisions and protect his finances..

When my sons are in Iraq I handle everything for them.. they are in a war zone they dont need to worry about their finances.. its a trust they have in me and they know I protect their interests (usually better than my own). Just so you know with POA's some banking institutions will require one of theirs.. a General POA sometimes will not work.. we got around that by my son's adding my name to their checking accounts.. I do not have a bank card from them but I can call and not have to deal with the POA stuff.

Not everyone is as comfortable with this but my son's know me know how protective I am of their money and again its a trust I take seriously. When they come home from deployment they take it all back over...

I forgot to add that I send them a statement each month showing what I paid and what their balances are on the accounts They can log into their bank accounts at anytime and see what I have done.. They appreciate the statements via email because they dont have to bother looking ..
My son is Stateside and I have a POA. The main reason is MEDICAL! If something happens medically, and you do not have a POA, WHO will make those decisions? Does he want strangers making HIS medical decisions, or his parents? That should be enough reason for him to do a POA. Hope this helps!
