Hey! So my husband will graduate from bootcamp in mid-March and then we will be headed to Charleston for his Nuke schooling. I've been trying to find info on the web since before he left, but I just haven't found any answers to my questions.

We know from our married Nuke friends and people we know in the Nuke program, that living off-base is the better option to go in Charleston. I'm really wanting to go to Charleston a few weeks before PIR and secure a place to live so that he doesn't have to stress about the process once he gets there; so all he has to worry about is moving our stuff from Alabama. Is it possible for me to do that? Or does that have to be his responsibility? I've read about signing a lease and having to use Power of Attorney to put his name on the lease. Would it just be better to have him look for housing once he arrives in Charleston? From what I've read they get a day or so to go off base and look for housing. If I go to Charleston at that time, would I be able to house hunt with him? I want to make house hunting/moving easy on him cause he just hates it, while I think its enjoyable. Could I even look for houses if I go and then send him a list of places that I liked so that he could check them out when he gets there? Or is there a Navy office that I could contact about these questions/what to do for this?

If anyone has any advice on this, I would REALLY appreciate it! I'm super lost on what to do, but super excited to move.

Thank you in advance!

I see you belong to our nuke moms group - come on over there and post your question.  We have some mom's on there who have married sailors and can probably give you some more info.

Pretty sure they do not let him move off base for the first two weeks until he hits phase two of liberty. I've been told that by other nuke spouses, but policies change all the time.  Check the nuke moms group.  I do know he has to put in a chit to his school to get permission to live offbase.  That alone can take a little while.

The housing office can help with private rentals off base, give you an idea of what to avoid, what to look for in a lease with the military clause, and they will review leases to be sure they fit the criteria.

Look at the Family Services page for links to moving to the area. See f you can request a Welcome Aboard packet.  If you call, they can help with information, or who to contact.
