My husband is a nuke and is leaving for boot camp on January 26. I have a question because we cannot seem to get a straight answer no matter how hard we try. So my question is, how soon after my husband finishes boot camp, will my son and I be able to join him in South Carolina? Also will the Navy pay for the move, or do we have to pay for it? And how do we get base housing? None of the recruiters here seem to have an answer so I thought I would ask here to see if someone can give me information based on experience.

Usually you can go right after he has earned his liberty privileges before he can move in with you.  That is a couple of weeks.

His orders will indicate whether your move and travel is paid for (it should be).  Base is usually available, although some rent (you'll get BAH).  You need a copy of his orders ( at MEPS when he ships, ask the recruiter for help) and a POA which lets you handle arranging a packout, signing leases, and so on.  Once he gets to Great Lakes, you can get on the housing wait list (I think). The Navy will not ship your vehicle, you have to drive it there.  There is a chance they'll let him go help, but I would not plan on it.  Policy changes all the time, be sure you get up to date info.

Go get that POA today!!!!!!

Best thing for now is to find all the nuke groups on here, and ask the wives.  I know there are several nuke/Charleston/Goose Creek groups.

How do I get the POA?

Check the requirements for your state, find someone who does them, or print one out,  and have it notarized.  I can't give you details, as everywhere is a bit different.  The recruiter may have advice, they probably see a lot of power of attorneys.
