I am very curious how the navy assigns people to ships and divisions.  Do they just randomly place people together or do they look at their A school assignments and place people with different jobs together?  Do they consider ASVAB scores when putting people together?  In thinking about battlestations and teamwork, I don't know if it would be better to have like members or different types of people to take care of the different tasks.  We were in the DEP program for several months, so there would have been plenty of time to sort the sailors, but would the Navy do that?  If randomly selected, would there be the potential for some ship/div to be at a disadvantage or possibly advantage, if you got the lucky div!  How much time do you think goes into the preplanning of bootcamp?  I think it has to be an interesting process.

oooops, I was talking about boot camp! The "we" I was referring to would by my family. This is the first time we have had a child to leave, and we are very close. So I guess you can tell that I feel like "we" joined the Navy! Please explain what USN is. This is all very new to me, so please forgive my errors.
I had heard that there was some sorting to it. You hear so many different things, and this site has been the best for learning how this all works. I was told they would ask if you were a musician, and if so place you with others, for example. I know once boot camp is over and school is done, they will have to have different positions throughout the ship, I guess I was just worried about how you get through battlestations if say, everyone in the division had the same strengths and same shortcomings. I get how they are trying to strengthen the individual through team building. I just was wondering if there was a method to the madness. Match.com! Too funny!
Thanks, Emma! That was really what I was curious about. I was hoping my son would be with the musicians, but I guess not.
Emma,
So did you grow up with parents in the Navy? This is all very new to me. I think I have been on one army base about 20 years ago, and I remember my friend who was married to an army capt. going to the commissary and getting deals on food and diapers! Other than that, no exposure to anything military. What a learning curve this is for my family!
