I just made reservations at the Ramada Inn. Is this a good hotel? I have heard good and bad.

Spring Hill Suites - Waukegan.  $79/night for  small suite with two queen size beds and a sofa that folds out into a full size bed.  VERY NICE!  Ask for Navy Grad rate.  Good Breakfast, Friendly and very helpful staff.  Easy to get to PIR.  Right out of the parking lot, right onto 43, then left onto 137.  Base was a couple of miles down on right - well marked with signs!  847-688-9800.

Attended PIR 04/13/2012 we stayed at Spring Hill Suites in Waukegan 5 miles from the base. The hotel staff was very friendly and welcoming. The hotel was clean and in a great area, with a Wal-Mart, Dunkin Donuts and shopping area close by. Any questions we had, they had an answer for. Best places to go eat, the directions and menus were printed out on paper ready for us. Also any place that delivered. They were well prepared for our day with our sailor. We took the shuttle to PIR for $3 per person and was driven right up to the gate, by-passing the long line of traffic waiting to get on base to park after PIR the shuttle was right there waiting for us! They congratulated us and our sailor everytime we saw the hotel staff, they knew how to make us feel special on such a special day.

PIR  is 06/01/12 at Marriott Courtyard.  It seems the AAA rate is better than asking for the PIR rate,  I will update you when I return from our adventure.

I just returned from Great Lakes (PIR 5/25/12).  I stayed at the days Inn Great Lakes, and I was very happy with it.  The rates vere very reasonable, and the room was clean.  I was alone with my 5 year old son, and felt very safe there.  This hotel does not have a restaurant or pool, but to be honest, we were so busy, I didn;t miss any of that.  They have a small breakfast area with waffles, cereal, coffee, juice, etc.I would stay here again..

Cant say enough about the Residence Inn in Waukegan.  We stayed there for the 5-18-12 PIR.  Got a SUPER rate on Priceline.  Asked for a three star hotel at a two star price and ended up with Residence Inn!  Room was beautiful and clean.  Continental breakfast was great.  They even serve a free light dinner with beer and wine M-TH nights.  They arranged shuttle service through a local taxi company to the PIR on Friday which was very convenient ($3/person each way).  Staff were nice and helpful.  Computer with printer available in the lobby so I could print off our boarding passes to come home.

I have to agree with you. We were at the Residence Inn in Waukegen for the 10/5/12 PIR and the service was wonderful, the staff super helpful and amenities were just like home. We had a 2 bedroom/2 bath suite and it slept 6 people just fine, and we had a full kitchen with an oven/stove as well as a microwave, full size refrigerator and dishwasher.  Free Wi-Fi in the rooms. They have smaller rooms as well, and shuttle directly to RTC for PIR. Breakfast was not just continental, there was also hot items available, and each day was different hot foods.  Great atmosphere and worth it. Pretty close to Great Lakes RTC. Rates reduce friday/sat night if you are there for graduation. Highly recommended

Has anyone stayed at the Days Inn in Libertyville?

We stayed a couple years ago for my Niece's PIR at the Chicago-Libertyville Holiday Inn Express on Buckley Rd. and plan to stay there again this time. It's only a few minutes away and on the same road as the gate you will use to enter the base. It was comfortable, clean and reasonably priced. www.holidayinn.com

There are lots of suggestions within this site and usually also in your PIR group.

The Grad Pack that came with the Form Letter should have had some suggestions with contact information as well.

The Navy Gateway Inns & Suites is located on the main base, about 1.5 miles from RTC. Only those with military IDs can access the base to stay there.  http://dodlodging.net or 1-877-NavyBed (1-877-628-9233).

The Navy Lodge is located 1.9 miles off base from RTC and guests of graduation are allowed to stay there.  https://reservations.staydod.com/hotelSearch.do?action=View&pro... or 847-689-1485.

There are also hotels in Vernon Hills, Gurnee, and Waukegan.  The Ramada Inn Waukegan hosts a Meet and Greet (some like the place and others do NOT).  We stayed at the Hotel Indigo-Vernon Hills in 2008.  Here are other places that people have mentioned (listed in the order I found them and I added the links for your convenience; I do not recommend or endorse any particular one):  Hampton Inn in Libertyville, Residence Inn Waukegan, Red Carpet Inn in North Chicago, Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham at Wadsworth WaukeganLa Quinta Inn & Suites in Gurnee...

To add to this, Sailors who will be students at the TSC for training or "A" School cannot visit at the Navy Gateway Inns & Suites.  They cannot go to the Navy Gateway Inns & Suites PIR weekend or any time while they are students at the TSC.  You will want to keep that in mind if you book your accommodations there.  If you do not have a car, you would also have to be dropped off at the Visitors Center and walk from there and would have to ride with someone staying there or walk to the gate to be picked up.  I just wanted to make sure you had that information if you are the spouse of a Sailor or otherwise have military ID that would permit you to access the base and stay there.

A mom, MelMe251, posted a discussion, PIR Information (clickable link), today that details her experience with the Gateway Inn for PIR 01/18/2013 and indicates that her Sailor who is a TSC student was able to go to their hotel room at the Gateway Inn.  She did not mention that her Sailor needed a special chit to visit there, but that was the case a few years ago.
