My son is due back in sometime in August.  Does anyone know how much notice families are usually given regarding an exact date?  Are families able to go on the bases and watch the ships come in?

And if they can't get at the sailors, the families make wonderful unsuspecting targets. Just because it hasn't happened yet does not mean it will not or cannot.
I am also a memeber of GAP(Go Army Parents). I just received a notice about posting names/personal info/locations. There must have been a problem so where. I have seen it several places on N4M's lately. We can never be too careful.
The ship's ombudsman will mail you a Homecoming packet, if your son has given her (usually a
someone's spouse) your name, address and phone as a contact person. After that you would only be contacted about the date if it changes. That doesn't happen often. In that case you would only be told "3 days later" or "one month delay" from the original date, not a specific date. Homecoming is a big deal. You should definitely go. The packet I mentioned will have everything you need to be there when you son's ship docks.Contact the Ombudsman or Family Readiness Group (FRG) for your son's ship. Also email your son like this LastnameFirstinitialMiddleinitial @Shipname.navy.mil to make sure he has put you on this list. Good luck.
Thank you.
Have yor son give the ambudsman your contact info. We have a good one for the Albany as far as I have seen so far. She will email all family members she's got contact info for as soon as she gets it. We found out from her about a month before on the exact day our guys were landing. The ambudsman is also the one who will make sure you have the go for getting on base when they come home after deployments.
