My Sr called crying so bad I couldn't understand her. She hurt her knees. Xray this coming Monday. Something about 6 more months at RTC. She wants to come home. I don't have any idea what is going on.

It sounds like she has been moved to the RCU--Recruit Convalescent Unit--where sick or injured recruits go to heal and be cycled back into another TG. (Join SHIP 04 DIV 2341 for more information.) She will be able to call every other Sunday if she wasn't able to call during the week to let you know what is going on as she did today, but since they are still recruits, those calls can be lost if someone messes it up for them just as calls can be lost for other divisions. While in the RCU, recruits participate in physical therapy at the RTC's health facility, USS Tranquility, Freedom Hall Physical Training Facility or the USS Indianapolis Combat Training Pool. RCU recruits maintain their academic requirements while under medical care in their barracks.

If she indicates that she wants to go home, she may get her wish and then she will have to heal and then have to start all over if she plans to join the Navy and will have to get 2 waivers to do so, but she will be paid for the time that she has been at the RTC. If she stays at the RCU, she will continue to be paid and will complete some of her academic requirements and will eventually go on to be a Sailor once she is declared Fit for Full Duty (FFD) and the time that she is at the RTC will count toward her enlistment time. It is rough to be ASMO'd to the RCU and some do get discouraged as a result (some go home as a result and others decide that they want to stay and fight through). She will need more encouragement to keep going, but she can make it if she wants to.

Sense she is still in bootcamp, she can't just make phone calls to let you know what is going on with her.  Nor can anyone on the base let you know what is going on with her, only she can do that.  As was said if she wants to go home, she very well could get her wish BUT keep in mind if she decides to go home the chance of her getting back in is slim.  Plus she will need two extra waivers to be approved before she can even try to get back in.

No matter what happens, be supportive of her.  She has no idea what is going on right now, if she hasn't even had xrays yet then no one really knows what kind of treatment she will need or the time it will take for her to heal.

My friend broke his leg in bootcamp.  He was in RCU for several months, but did not want to come home.  He worked hard at what he was allowed to do... some studying of Navy subjects, volunteering to help the petty officers who ran the division, and doing his physical therapy.  It is emotionally draining, so she needs to know it is okay to feel down about it.  Complain to mom though, NOT to the people who will cut her loose for bad attitude.
