My 19 yr old daughter just left for boot camp on Tuesday and I was fine until that last phone call....  Hearing the tired tone in her voice and knowing what was ahead of her- it just broke my heart.   She stated that I wouldn't hear from her for at least three weeks.  Wow, I thought it was only two weeks!  I would love any suggestions for getting through these next few weeks of no contact.  I thought I of starting a journal so I would remember things I wanted to write or say to her (about funny things that happened, etc).  But every time I think of her or see her picture, I get emotional.  I am so proud of her but miss my girl!  I am very happy to have found this group.  :)

I am so sorry that you are still waiting on that call.  I have been reading that sometimes they get delayed if the recruit is doing different things.  I will keep my fingers and toes crossed that you get that call asap!  Hang in there!!!!  It is so hard to not have that contact like we are use to and yes no new is good news.. but I understand, that still doesn't ease the pain when you are missing them.  :(

My Olivia has been in the Navy now almost 3 1/2 years.  I still remember when she left.  The feeling of emptiness with out my baby girl.  She enlisted the August before her senior year of high school.  The entire time she was excited to be in the delayed entrance program and 'couldn't wait for boot camp'.  She viewed her enlistement as a real challenge and as an extension of her being a black belt.  I tried to get her to consider ROTC but she insisted on starting with boot camp.  It broke my heart.   I wanted my baby to just go to college like her 2 older sisters and then come home for the holidays or long week ends to do her laundry.  I still feel like she has been plucked away from me.  That entire senior year I tried to embrace every moment with her because I knew how quickly it would pass.

I can tell you that when you see your daughter in Chicago in 12 weeks, you will be amazed of the woman she will become.  Write her A LOT.  That is what kept Olivia going.  I sent her a letter 3 - 4 times a week. Even if it were just a few lines.  My family sent letters as well.  They really need the encouragement.  I think the first few nights they keep them awake for 40 hours or something crazy.  I know you are sad.  I remember.  When your receive "the box", you'll smell her clothes, you'll cry but remember to tell yourself you raised an amazing young woman.  12 weeks will go by faster than you think.  Make your hotel reservation ASAP.  Graduation was the most amazing ceremony I'd every been to.  Stay strong my new Navy for Mom's friend!

Ollivia sounds like my daughter.  She had wanted this for so long and did do some college to make me and her father happy, but that bug was still in her.  So we had to let her go and make her own path in life.  Hardest thing I have ever had to do, but during her decision process, i could she her growing and maturing.  So I am very anxious to see how much more she has matured and grown as a woman.

I did hear that they would keep them up for long periods of time for the first few days and I think that was were my anxiety got really high... I wanted to protect her and make sure she was ok, but with no contact, how was I going to help... I guess that's where the apron got cut- I have to let her do this on her own and just be here to be her supporter and cheerleader.  Hard but I will do it! :)  the box came and I took that as one step closer to some form of contact with letters.  I have letters waiting to go and our family is patiently waiting as well.  And I definitely be making hotel reservations as soon as I get a date :)  So excited for graduation!  And thank you Lisa for your advice and story... it does help to hear from others!  I love my new friends :)

I will re-iterate what everyone else is saying here, write! I wrote a letter every day and numbered the envelopes so he would know the order they were written. I found lots of silly cartoons and printed them out and wrote around them. He told me he loved hearing about "normal stuff" like the weather or what the dog was doing. I also ended every letter with an inspirational quote of the day. He told me that it didn't matter how bad his day was, he always knew that when mail call came, there would be something for him. (His sister and GF wrote a lot too!) He is now in A school so he has his phone. He asked me to send him an inspirational quote every morning. As he gets up at 4:45am we agreed I would send it the night before. :)

Also, no news really is good news. I found Ship 5 too and several people on here I had become friendly with had kids sent home. It is heartbreaking. So keep thinking positively and she will do fine. The time starts going faster around week 3 and before you know it you will be in Great Lakes with a Sailor of your own. Good luck to you and your SR :)

One more thing....Send pictures!!

One more thing, send their favorite comic strips....oh and if you REALLY want them to appreciate you, send them musical cards. They will remember those.

definitely :)  Already getting them ready!

Hey....wait a minute. I was kidding about the musical cards.

LOL... darn it I was just running out to load up on musical cards!!  No not really.. she would kill me if I sent her those.  :)

My son tells the story of the sailor who got a musical card. The SR was doing pushups until the music died out.

YIKES!! that is crazy!  My daughter has a birthday later this month and she doesn't want any birthday cards bc she heard that they single out the birthday recruits- either they have to do extra pushups or the others do all the pushups and the birthday person gets to watch and rest....

What great ideas!  Inspirational quotes and silly cartoons..  love that!  I know she will need that connection from home and can't wait to start showing her how much she is thought of and how proud we are of her!

I am not sure what SHIP 5. What is this?  And everyday I think no news is good news.  thank you for reaching out to me :)
