Higgins Namesake: COLONEL WILLIAM R. HIGGINS, USMC

Colonel William R. (Rich) Higgins, USMC, disappeared on Feb. 17, 1988, while serving as the Chief, Observer Group Lebanon and Senior Military Observer, United States Military Observer Group,
United Nations Truce Supervision Organization. After being held captive by pro-Iranian terrorists in Lebanon, Col. Higgins was murdered. The exact date of death is uncertain; however, he was declared dead on Jul. 6, 1990. His remains were eventually recovered and interred at Quantico National Cemetery Dec. 30, 1991.
“As an officer of Marines, I believe it is my charge to set the example. I must create a favorable impression in courage, appearance, and personal conduct. I must be mentally alert, morally straight,
and physically strong. I must uphold the personal and professional credo of ‘doing what is right even when no one is looking.’ My integrity can never be challenged and my character must be unimpeachable. My physical courage must be such that I can face the danger of combat with calmness and firmness, and my moral courage must be equal to fear of criticism I will surely face.” - Sept 1979, then Major Higgins, from an essay entitled My Credo.
SHIP:
Commissioned on April 24, 1999, USS HIGGINS (DDG-76)

Motto of her namesake “First to Fight!”

The HIGGINS crew continues to live up to the words of Senator Charles S. Robb: “The USS HIGGINS puts the world on notice: those who threaten America’s interest or dare to terrorize its citizens will face Colonel Rich Higgins and the 8,300 tons of pure American steel that now surround his spirit.”

CREW:  288 (47 Female)

So ladies here we go...
Our May adoption for June is the USS Higgins.  Thanks everyone for all the wonderful ideas for this month's adoptees...keep them coming!  We love all your creative feedback! The USS Higgins will be looking forward to a steel beach party about the time our packages arrive.
One of the things the ship is doing is linking with an elementary school in San Diego.  The school’s mascot is a dolphin and the Chaplain's wife bought a dolphin at Sea World for the Chaplain to take along on the ship.  He takes pictures of the dolphin ("SOLANA") doing various jobs around the ship.  Then they send the pictures to the school.  They have a bulletin board at the school that they post news from the dolphin on...  the school kids are writing to the ship.  So a “summertime fun with a water theme" would fit in great.  We could even send photos from everyone (with a dolphin in the picture) back to the ship with our packages saying "Hi" back from us Molly Moms and supporters...LOL...reminds me of the Christmas "fruitcake" adventure!

Our “We Stitch Love” group will be there every stitch of the way…LOL…no pun intended.  We will need 276+ pillowcases for this month.
As we get more info from the POC, we'll post it for here for everyone.  A special thank you goes out to Susan for all her help with this month's adoptees.

Thanks Diane!  Am trying to light a fire under MA Moms, but it ain't happenin'!!!

Has anyone tried having a packing party on a Sunday afternoon?  How did it go?  Were Moms willing to leave families on the last day of a week-end to get together and pack?  Just curious.  I need some ideas for my state ...

I wish I had some extra gas money I'd come out for a party...I should check on train tickets...

hip hip, HOOYAH!!!

Great question NYPD and thanks Diane for clarifying this adoption is for EVERYONE.  The discussion has been updated and please comment away if anything is confusing.  This is my first go at the monthly adoption and I appreciate everyone's feedback to make it go smoothly!  Yeah!!!!!

Solana and the USS Higgins watching the horizon for the Molly mom mail from all over our country heading their way!!

Colorado has a packing party scheduled...  MA moms are working on a get together...  who else??  Come one, come all!!  Plan a packing party or have one of your own!!  Call a neighbor to come over have a cup of coffee and write a few cards!!  Mail them away with a few squirt guns, beach towels, granola bars, drink mixes...  and voila!!  You just held your own packing party!!  That is the way we all started...  like the little engine that could... chugga, chugga, choo, choo!!

didn't we have our first Illinois packing party on a Sun....Mayby? It has been a few years...but I think it was, oh maybe it wasn't .....HELP ILLINOIS MOMS !!!!!!!.........it was a GREAT time what ever day it was ...I'd do it on a Sun...
Thanks Lauren.  I am kind of leaning that way because it has always been on a Sat. afternoon here.  I thought Sun. might bring out a few more Moms or maybe different ones.
Proud Navy we had a packing party in Texas on a Sunday afternoon and packed 130 boxes.
130 boxes!!!  Oh my!  We did close to 100 for Christmas time, but not that many.  But then again you are a BIG state and we are much smaller.  I'd be thrilled by anywhere between 30-50.  :)  Maybe if I could get a TV and have the Red Sox game on things would grow!!!  There's a thought, a Sox game with "Tessie" playing in the background.  If you don't know about "Tessie" check out my page, I posted it there.  "Tessie" is played by Dropkick Murphy and is the official theme song of the Red Sox.  Just a little Sox Nation trivia for those of you unfamiliar with New Englanders and their crazy love affair with the team!

Woohoo Massachusetts!!!  Way to go.  Go get'm!  If you're looking for volunteers we can put the packing party on VolunteerMatch.  It should be somewhere other than a personal home though...I would recommend posting someone's home.  Let me know if you do and we can get a listing out for you!  Yeah!!!

We've never had enough people attend to do it anyplace other than a private home.  But, maybe this time with it being a Sunday afternoon.  I'll have to look around and see what we might be able to use in the immediate area.  Fenway Park??  Oh that wouldn't work, they'd have to play ball around us.  teehee!!
