I will be doing scarfs for Christmas,to send to Afganistan. Since it takes a while to knit or crotchet a number of scarfs, I'm asking all of you for your help now. The scarfs will need to be no wider than 8 inches and 60 inches long and no fringe that could get caught in their gear. They must be desert camo, tans, and browns. Any of you have any questions, please let me know. The more scarfs the better. They will all be sent to our sailors and Marines to keep them warm. To those who don't knit & crochet the scarfs can be made of polar fleece. They actually have a fabric pattern that looks like a sand (grades of tans). Since the fleece is about 60" wide, all the you need to do is cut 7 or 8' wide stripes and the cut off the selvages to make them look neat.

We now have 250 scarfs.

bought some yarn today. And I passed this info on to a HAE member who has alot of fleece. She is going to go thru it.
Also, a new HAE member, has a neighbor who was looking for projects and she crochets. And she can buy her own yarn. woohoo!
GOSH I LOVE US SO MUCH ---- Knit for Navy helping MAS, HAE helping Knit for the Navy, MAS helping HAE

We are beyond great ---seriously great. Anything for our troops :)
This is great!!! I've already done a few and was considering how to get them sent. I'll let you know later. It is 85 here today, hard to sit with yarn in my lap. When do we send them out? Tell me where to go read if it is posted.

Thanks!
We will wait until MAS has a place for them to go. Molly is in charge of finding a home for all these great scarfs.
I think we may have our Afghanistan guys for Xmas ---not for sure yet BUT getting closer.
I really want Afghanistan for Xmas --- its just so cold and they will love homemade warm scarfs.
I will 100% have a address and name on November 1st.
I sure do admire you Moms ---- plus nothing and i mean nothing is better then something homemade.
remember when Grandma would make you these homemade things :) I still have a crochet blanket my mom made year years and year ago. I love that blanket because she took the time to make it.
I still think I have (boxed away) the crocet doll that hid the toilet paper (LOL LOL ) couldnt make that go with the decor' lol
Can I use a dark green color yarn or do they have to been tans & browns?
When I asked I talked to either those who have been there , those who are there and those who are in charge of whose there --they all said dessert camo look, browns, tans, yep thing boring blah --- but if they are in war zone that is all they can wear (even in there camps)
We are in the process of speaking with a Officer that said a good rule of thumb is skin tones--you cant go wrong if you think skin tones.
Im so sorry I choose probably the most boring of ones to make to ask you guys for---- not much to be creative with --BUT its going to be so cold there and we want them to be warm and I knew it was knit for the Navy that could do that. HUGS to Knitting Moms
No problem, I'll go get some "skin" color yarn. ha ha
We can't be creative with the color. But you can get creative with the patterns you knit or crochet into the scarf. Also, the desert camo yarn makes a different color pattern with every scarf, which is interesting.
I bought a red heart yarn on Saturday-called buff fleck. than with little tiny flecks of dark brown and darker tan. alittle stiff but I will wash the scarf when I am done. I am planning to put a single crochet edge around, perhaps in dark brown. that will make it alittle more interesting, and I did leave room for that in the width.
Lyn, do we mail the scarfs to you or just hold for the December group? for some reason, I thought you were doing a separate group.
The scarfs for Christmas is a joint project between MAS and Knit for the Navy. They will go out to the group Molly will chose for the December group. So hold onto them. I'll even mail them along with my Dec. pillowcases and just put Molly's labels and HAE labels on the boxes. The scarfs from the Knit for the Navy will probably be mailed to me and I'll then send them on to our sailors or marines.
