We just got a call from my son who is set to graduate THIS FRIDAY!!! He just got separated. He is crushed and I am at a loss. The reason they gave was Sleep Apnea. I don't have any more details except he arrived at Ship 5 yesterday and was only able to call today. What can I do and who can I call to help my son.

So sorry to hear that you are going through this. There probably isn't a lot you can do other than to be supportive, but you will find a lot of information and advice in the Ship 5 Group.

I have (obstructive) sleep apnea myself, so I know a little about it. I would want to know if they have confirmed the diagnosis with monitoring. They aren't going to talk to you without your son's permission, and there may not really be any need. Have confidence in him and let him know it.

Every one of my 3 sons tried something and had it "go south". More than once. They picked themselves up and started again, which helped make them the resilient men they are. (Come to think of it, I "crashed and burned" a couple of times myself.)

Thank you for the encouragement.I have no idea how they came up with the diagnosis. He doesn't even snore. I haven't been able to get any answers. His division was not happy about it. Whether they can do anything about that, I have no idea. I just hope my son stays strong during the long processing out period. It must be torture for all those that have to go through it.

Wow, seems there should have been some hint before now. My heart goes out to him

Thank you. I pray that he fights this and wins. He is third generation Navy.

Ship 5 is for those recruits in the process of being discharged from Boot Camp. It takes 2-3 weeks to be processed out once a recruit is moved to Ship 5 (SEPS). (Join Ship 5 Moms(Formerly Ship 17) and see FAQ about SEPS and http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/faq.html#separations for more information.)

They told us 4-5 weeks. :-(

berlenza I hope you have had some answers by now. How is it going?

My son has been able to contact us a few times. He is doing well. I just can't believe how long they take to process these kids out. He hasn't seen Legal yet. He said it's overcrowded. I don't know whats going on over there but something is not right and needs to change quickly.

Hope you get answers soon.

Berlenza I'm so sorry this is happening can't imagine what is going on. My prayers to you and your son.
