Hi Shawn's mom - I received a letter yesterday!!  It was short.  It was written on 4/16.  He siad that they were doing swim quals the next day.  I think that establishes the basline for their swimming skills.  He said the first week was less than desireable, although he didn't use that term.  He siad there was alot of yelling and he now understands the term "cussing like a sailor".  He said he hope to talk with us on the phone soon, so they must be at least talking about giving them the privledge.  He says he misses us and looks forward to seeing us at PIR.  Our SR was intentionaly distanceing himself from us prior to leaving for boot camp.  He wanted to see how he would do and get us used to him not bing around all the time.  He spent alot of time at the local drag strip, working and at a friends house where he was rebuilding the enginein his sisters car.  I;m not really sure if that strategy helped or not.  I look forward to meeting you.  I have a stepson as well.  I've been his other mom since he was 4.  He is 28 now and wanting to join the Army.  He is very proud of his little brother. Praying you will receive a letter soon!!

Awwww..... So glad to hear you got some mail!!!  It sounds like things are going as expected. I'm just glad he didn't ask you to pray for some poor guy named Shawn! LOL!  I am sure he is doing ok too. He is not much of a writer anyway.  I can only imagine that sleep is very important at night instead of letters..  I will let you know when we finally hear something. Maybe Shawn is waiting for phone privileges.  Thanks for sharing your news..

Hi Shawn's mom- I'm sure that letter can't get there soon enough.  The one I received was dated 4/16, but the postmark was 4/23, so who knows how they actually get the letters into the mail.  He also sent the receipt for the items he purchased at the store there and it inlcuded envelopes and stamps, but the stationary was RTC.  I did send stamps and a phone card in a letter to him but it looked like he purchased a phone card at the store as well.  I;m sure you must be feeling grustrated, try to think of how happy you will be when you receive that letter or phone call and when you get to see him at PIR.  Only 39 days to go.  I love the countdown clock on the front of this page. It's a great reminder.  Something that helped me early on with this when I was struggling with not being able to be in regular contact with him, I was reading the prayer requests from our church and there was a mom asking for prayer for her son who was addicted to drugs and living on the streets and she didn't know from day to day how or what he was doing.  It put bootcamp into perscpective for me.  At least we know this is temporary and a good thing for our sons. Doesn't make you want a letter any less though. Have a good day!!

Hi Travis' Mom, in my letters, he had said that they only got to start writing last Sunday and I guess that's the day they send out the letters as well. Just thought that might help? :)

Thanks Kilng - That is helpful!!

Good morning Travis' Mom, another long weekend with no news... We are starting to wonder what's up??  Hopefully "no news is good news" and he is doing fine.  I have heard this week, week 4 called "hell week", I guess they really turn up the heat for these guys!!  We are just keeping our fingers crossed that he is doing fine..  Thanks for sharing all the news you got in your letter :-)  I have thought about and prayed for the mom with the son on drugs, and yes God is in control wherever they are, I have a coffee mug that says "Good morning, this is God! I will be handling all your problems today. I will not need your help - so, have a good day.  I love you!!  Thats what I'm standing on today!  :-)

Hi Shawn's mom! I have that same saying on a small card in my office at work. I love it.  It reminds me who is really in charge; and that there is no situation bigger than He is. Travis called today.  I was so surprised.  It was about 3:30 this afternoon.  He sounded good.  He said he had passed the swim quals, the first educational exam and has lost fat and added muscle. He said that he was not there for the first inspection because he was doing a special physical for submariners, but he is waiting to see how they did at a more recent inspection.  He confirmed that they can only mail letters on Sunday, so I would think that if we are going to get letters this week it would be on Wednesday or Thursday.  I'm praying that you receive a letter this week and a phone call too.  I am keeping you and your son in my prayers!

Recieved my first letter on thurs and got a call tonight about 5:30!!! It was awesome hearing his voice! cant wait to see him!

Yeah for you!!!  I am happy to hear that this ship and Div are starting to write and call, hopefully we will hear something soon too.  If you feel like sharing what is going on there I am all ears :-)

All he has really said is that he's bored at the moment because they haven't started any of the firefighting or stuff like that. Its been just learning ranks and how to make their bunks. He said after one in spection the next day some of the guys wouldnt do their bunks because they dont care that much(didnt say names of who lol). He also said they have started learning the stuff for graduation. Didnt say much but we could barely hear each other too. The call is an 847 area code so just be on the look out!!

Hello everyone, I just want to share my happiness with all of you guys, and thank you for your support. I finally received the first letter from my SR, and to my BIG surprise it was followed by the second call...I could not hold in the tears of joy, I finally know my boy is doing good,  looking forward to PIR...

Yeah for you ProudMom!!  Another kid making contact!!  We are still waiting, semi patiently, lol... Any news you feel like sharing about how its going there is welcome to my itching ears... :-)
