Carol....just checking to see if you got a letter today?  I still didn't and was really surprised.  I am about 850 miles away, but still...if it was mailed on Monday, I should have gotten it by now.  I am worried that something happened and he wasn't able to write.

In my daughters third letter I got today, she said the first mail call she got 0 letters.

Second mail call she got 15!!!  She said she really got upset the first mail call, but she was so excited the next day, she said she had more mail than anyone!  She even thanked me so much for sending the letters!  I think I might have gotten the wrong letter. j/k  I have an amazing daughter.  You guys hang in there, it will all work out, make sure you read the last paragraph of LaLa's questionnaire!

I know we can't send care packages.  My son just called and he said I had to stop sending newspaper clippings in his letters (I was trying to keep him posted on the NBA finals).  My sons birthday is Sunday, sure wish I could send him something:(.  Hope you get a call today.  He called around 2:30 so I hope parents aren't at work and don't pick up.  It was awesome to hear from him!
FYI:  I sent my son a musical card but he had to do extra exercises because of it. AND ( I did not do this!) but do not spray any perfume, air freshener or anything that smells good onto the envelope, he said someone got a letter like that and they all had to pay HELL for it.
Thanks to Kathleen and Anjelina for the news of the letters.  Today has been a really hard day for me.  I so had my heart set on getting word from him.  I have literally felt an ache in my chest all afternoon since my son told me no letter came in the mail.  I am very sorry to hear they are not working together as a team well.  I know there are such a variety of people from varied backgrounds, and this experience is a shock to them.  I pray they are able to work through this soon and support one another.  I pray it will make them stronger sailors.  I had a pt today whose husband was in the Navy when he was younger.  I told her my son was there in boot camp now, and asked if her husband had said much about that time.  She said that he has said it was very, very tough at first, but by the end, it was fun.  I guess we can all hold on to that hope that in the near future, they will not be sad and stressed, but enjoying what they are doing.
Oh my dearest fellow Mom, I completely understand what you mean by the ache you are feeling. I tried to explain to my husband that I am actually in physical pain with wonder and worry. I am praying your letter will come tomorrow too!! I want to drive those 3 hours north and just sit there and pray for a glimpse of my son.
How do we know they are not working as a team well?  Did I miss something?  Don't quite know how to navigate this site and trying to get used to it.

Angie...Kathleen got a couple of letters that mentioned the division had been struggling with the "teamwork" aspect.  I think that's a very typical problem.  They are learning to do things that they've never had to do before, but it needs to be done as efficiently as possible...not to mention *correctly*.  It takes some time to get that many people on the same page sometimes.  I spoke with another of my son's friends who has recently completed Air Force basic training and his tech school already.  He says it took his flight (same as our divisions) 5 weeks to solidify teamwork, and therefore 5 weeks before they could write a letter.  He told me not to worry...they will get it together.  Said the officers in charge of them are specifically trained to bring out the best in them and however hard they are on them, it is with the goal in mind of *success* for the group.  He helped give me some peace of mind last night.

Must go get ready for work....will let y'all know if my letter/s come today!

I just spoke with a young man my son's age (19) who just completed Marine boot camp in late Feb/early March.  I asked him about the working together as a team, and he said the military wants to break them down from being individuals and have them thinking in a team-oriented military mindset...work together to complete tasks quickly, cooperate, etc.  I hope they have begun to pull together since the letter was written Sunday!

I hope all turns out well and soon my son is in charge of his division #234 (78 strong SRs) and I'm sure he is doing all he can to get the division working as a grp.  I am still hoping to receive a letter even if it is only a few lines (other than the form letter). I have written weekly but will write more frequently. I'm hoping they will be able to call this weekend.

Good evening ladies, I'm glad I finally found this discussion. My son left may 24 and I have not heard from him.

I get so desperate. My other sons tell me to stay off the  website cause it only makes me crazier. I am so sad and miss him so much. All you have written helps but also scares me. That they may be in trouble and cant write. I live in Texas.

I cant wait to get some mail even if its just one.

Mary

I understand how you feel, we are all feeling the same way...but  at least one mom (on this site) DID get a letter yesterday, but she only lives 3 hrs. away from Great Lakes, so depending on where you live, maybe today or this weekend...I have only gotten the form letter about graduation.  Did you get that yet?    I think maybe its the whole group that couldnt write for a while, probably not one individual.  But hang in there and keep writing him. I have been sending pre-addressed, stamped envelopes and even started one letter by writing..Dear mom and dad, lol.     today, I'm going to get some "encouragement/hang-in-there cards to send him.   Hang in there mom!!!  carol
