My son leaves in a week for GL. He will spend the night in a hotel and leave the next day. I've heard it can be a big family affair to be there to see him off (he still doesn't know if he will fly or go via bus). Is it tradition to have a big fan club there at MEPS? Is there a ceremony? I read here that some parents have gotten a gate pass for the airport so they could wait for the plane with their sailor. How are those obtained? Is it a good idea to invite others, such as grandparents that live locally, to MEPS, etc. for his ship date? Any help/advice about what is typically done is appreciated. I am excited for him but I'm feeling nostalgic and a little choked up at times. This week will fly by!

My son was in New Orleans LA for his Meps. They had a swearing in ceremony. We then met him at the airport and had several hours with him before he flew to Great Lakes. Yes family can come. Everyone over 17 I think, had to have valid ID, registration for vehicle and proof of insurance to get on the base. So glad we were there for that. Hope this helps
That is good to know. Thanks!

There will not be many loved ones there, but if you are able to be there, then do go, but you don't want to have lots of people. Ask your future Sailor who he would like to have attend.

Check out Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for... and the links there.

My son would like us there- we just don't know what is typical and we don't want to have a large group if it might make him uncomfortable. He said he was already sworn in so he didn't believe there was a ceremony, but regardless of that, we'd want to be there if it would help him. He wants to ask his recruiter if there will be other recruits going with him at the same time from our region.

He will most likely have a final swearing in ceremony. We dropped our son off today at our recruiting station. He stays tonight in the city and will go to MEPS for his final swearing in tomorrow morning. We'll be going up for that. We had the option of taking him out to dinner tonight, but it was rough enough just saying goodbye at the recruiting office. He declined the dinner and said he'd like to spend some time alone. We found out just a few minutes ago that he's the only one flying out of our city tomorrow.

You might ask him what he wants.

Have you asked your future Recruit what he wants? Our daughter wanted us there for the swearing in ceremony, but wanted the good-byes at MEPS (knowing that the longer things dragged out the greater chance of tears). Whatever you decide, bring a camera and tissues.

That is good to know- thank you! I wonder if there always is a swearing in ceremony. My son said he has already been sworn in.
My son was sworn in at the beginning when he first enlisted and again before he flew to Great Lakes

The swearing in at the time of signing the contract and joining DEP is non-binding and really no big deal. The swearing in before leaving for Great Lakes makes your kid a member of the US Navy. Its a life altering moment that I would not have missed for the world. The pride starts here.

I wouldn't have either

i am so glad i opened thid page, my son leaves for blue camp in great lakes, and i had no clue about us being allowed to attend, who can i check with about that. also what do they need to take with them, as far as clothing.

alaskjoo2,

Your son's Recruiter should be able to help you. Else contact MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) directly. You're in Chula Vista? Then its probably the San Diego MEPS -  (858) 874-2400 ext. 241.

Clothing? Just what he is wearing. Bring a jacket, its still cool in Illinois. All his civilian clothing will be returned home in "The Box".
