Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

My son just finished in San Diego. Did very well and will get to do the Nuclear field.  He doesn't leave until August....long wait....so what do we do in the meantime?  Where do I buy a NAVY MOM blouse or shirt? 

I am so excited for him.....love this site too! N

Yes unless a seat opens up sooner.
wonder520 Welcome! Go to groups and type in Nuke Moms. You will find this site very helpful and will be able to find out what your son will be going through. My son went nuke and went through 2 years of very tough training. He was deployed overseas in March. These ladies helped me a lot! Wish I had found out about Navy 4 Moms while he was in boot camp. Good luck!

I am excited but the wait is soo long.......He is now talking about signing something to try to go earlier.....I am fine with that....but the more I read the more I worry....people failing tests, not graduating when they said, getting hurt....and having to change jobs.....I just want my son to do well, pass the tests and serve in the job he so desperately wants to do ... currently he is calling the recruiting office three times a week and waiting....

The majority have no problems at all, but their moms aren't here asking for as much advice!  The posts here with major issues are not the norm.

 

My nuke nephew's re-enlistment bonus is huge (changes often, so ask) and he advanced to E-5 the first time up.  This is often the case for nukes, but they earn it.  So while he is looking at other rates, he should ask about the advancement percentages, the sea/shore rotation, and if there are re-enlistment bonuses at all.  Nukes have tough training, many do end up in other rates because the schools are tough, but it is well worthwhile to stick to the nuke program if he has the ability and interest.  Also, he has to understand, that he won't be getting to the fleet as quickly as he thinks, no matter what rate he gets into.  A school almost always involves holds and delays.  The Navy is all about hurry up and wait he'd better learn the patience drill ASAP, or he'll be perpetually frustrated.

Not being rude, but until he has finished bootcamp he is NOT a Sailor...so reality is you are not a Navy mom until that time also...

I agree, Emma! There are no "rules' about when one becomes a Navy Mom... I have supported my son in his decision since the day he first talked to me about wanting to enlist. I made it my job to educate myself about this journey every step of the way so I could not only be a supportive mom, but also an informed mom.  

Wonders520~ There is no harm at all in wearing a Navy mom shirt. No, your son will not be a Sailor until he completes boot camp, but you are certainly free to show your support and pride in him. FYI~ My son is in Goose Creek studying hard to become a nuke. He is doing well.

 

A little kindness goes a long way. We are all at different places on this journey, but we should be nice and support one another. 

 

 

 

Sorry disagree with you on that point...they are not Sailors until after PIR...so the same goes for the familiy.  If the recruit is seperated in bootcamp, they where never Sailors...so the parents are not Navy parents.  My 2 cents...

 

Ask the DEPper what they want...if they want the parents wearing the gear or not.

If you are responding to me, I said "No, your son will not be a Sailor until he completes boot camp"...  I did not say after PIR, but of course that comes at the successful completion of boot camp.

I can understand the excitement both you and your soon-to-be-SR are feeling. However, if you don't relax, you're going to drive yourself crazy. As was mentioned by someone else, the Navy is all about hurry up and wait.

I would suggest your son quit bugging the recruiter, and start prepping himself for Boot Camp. He has a long way to go, and he needs to learn to take it one step at a time. Right now, he should be running, doing pushups, situps, and swimming. He should be spending his time learning his Sailor's Creed and General Orders. These are the things that will make his steps easier.

The program he is going through is not easy. In talking to my son the other day, he mentioned that the Nuke program has a higher failure rate than BUDS does. It will be very difficult, but worthwhile if he makes it.

You asked what to do in the meantime, I'd suggest finding Craig on here and having your son join the Deppers website, where he can get much more information.

Be happy you have until August to spend with him. Once he gets to Boot Camp, I predict you will be missing him greatly. Good luck to you and your son.
