I have no idea if I am doing this right or not but here I go. My son is leaving for boot camp on 8/5/14. I have no idea what to expect. My heart is breaking and i feel so alone. I feel like I am being silly for being so emotional but it is going to be so hard.

My son left on the 7th.  I don't think I cried that much in years.  It was one of the hardest things I had to do was say bye to him.  I've cried every day since he left, but I think that's normal. But I am very proud of him and I know this is such a rewarding experience for him with such wonderful possibilities.

If you ever need to vent - I'm here.

We have to lean on eachother because although I do have friends & family that are there for me they really don't "get" it. I have been keeping to myself because I have felt a few times that people think I am over reacting. But it helps to know that I am not and others feel the same as I do.

Stay strong.

Geosmom and Connors Mom my son is an SR at Great Lakes and trust me, other people DON'T get it!  As proud as we are of our son/daughter to make this decision, it's much harder than when I sent my daughter to college. This is the place to be for me.

Hi Moms!
My son left for boot camp Aug.7th. This has also been very emotional for me. I'm glad to see its not just me over reacting. I feel empty without being able to hear his voice. I am honored and so proud of him for his choice of joining but so sad to be without him!

I left info for you on your My Page.

To families with sons/daughters going to BC soon:

If you are dropping your loved ones to an airport and your son or daughter has NEVER been to an airport before, try to arrange a trial run. Go to the airport, park your car, walk around, show them where you'll drop them off, when security check is, how to go thru security gates, where departure gates are, make sure they have some money to buy food if the plane is delayed or cancelled, how to make a collect call (to you). I would even go to an airline's customer service and ask if you could get thru the security gate without a boarding pass (just to show them around - tell them the reason why).

I know a number of recruits who were overwhelmed by the time they got to Great Lakes because of things going wrong at the airport.

If your child has never been to an airport but you have, I would NEVER just drop them off. I would arrange to get a permission to accompany him/her to the boarding area and wait until they actually board the plane.  You should know what airline your recruit will be flying, so call the customer service for that airline and ask for help.  Your local United Service Organization (USO) will have a facility at the airport where service members can hang out but it may or may not be near the your departure gate. However, USOs have many members and if you can't do the trial run - maybe someone from USO can help.

The USO was AMAZING and super helpful for my SR when he was a DEPPER this past winter while on a long layover!!

We're truly in countdown mode. Special last DEP mtg. today with the BIG Chief. Tomorrow is his week out check in. Baby boy leaves from San Diego next Wednesday. I get to drive him over, then see the swearing in. I fully expect to be sad on the drive back to Arizona. Good thing there's a Sprinkles Cupcakery in La Jolla!

We've been through LOTS of SYLs with our older Army son over the course of his West Point life and now the BIG Army. We even put him on a plane for 2 years to Russia, when he served a mission for our church. Only phone calls twice a year and weekly emails.

Many of us have been blessed to have our children with us since before they were born. The attachments are strong. But no matter the length of time, we've raised them to be strong, independent and capable adults. So channel all that energy and time into something productive. Write letters, send goodie boxes, thank a serviceman, volunteer with USO, etc. It will make you feel better and the recipient feel loved and appreciated. Be prepared to tear up at the national anthem, if you don't already. My greatest support groups were the West Point Moms Facebook pages and Missionary Moms. Remind yourself that this is their life and their choices. We will get through this and be stronger because of it!

NavyMom 14, I am in Arizona also!!  My son reported Aug. 5- in San Jose, Ca.  I still have no box or letter.  He may have sent these to his brother in San Diego.

Is that a long way from San Jose?  Good luck.

Got The Box & The letter today! My sons PIR date is 10/3/14. Starting to look for rooms. Trying to decide if we should drive (I don't want to) or take the Amtrak. Plus my son has a lot of family that want to go even though they know they can't actually go to PIR. Looking into Navy Lodge.

they extra family you have coming will be able to watch from the chapel on closed circut tv
