My son just called and said he found out when stand down is.  Any suggestions from peeps in the know as far as purchasing tickets to fly home...airlines that offer military discounts...who is the best airline to fly with?  (Can't imagine flying over the holidays:/  Would love to hear from you!

We are asking that students not book flights earlier than 1000 on the 21st. Their leave will start at 0600 but traffic and time to the airports make it iffy so we want to ensure no one misses a flight and we ask that they allow plenty of time for check-in and security to ensure they make their flight. My staff will be on hand to assist and get them to the airport. The USO will have plenty of food and drinks available on both sides of the airport. Hope that answers the question.

Yes, that's great thank you!

I was wonder how the holidays work at Great Lakes, I have 2 sons there. 1 is starting school on Monday and the other will be at the end of boot camp around the holidays.

The one in school will be eligible to come home.  If the other has graduated from boot camp by then, so will he.  If not, he spends the holidays in boot camp.  They normally don't have graduations during the stand down.  If he does have PIR then, I'm not certain how it will be handled.

There will be a bootcamp graduation on the 21st of December and a graduation on the 28th.  Both of those groups will have the opportunity to come home for the holidays.

Seriously, you are one rockin' CO!   Thanks for taking the time here.

My son has a PIR on 12/28.  He will be attending A school in Great Lakes for AECF. After graduation on the 28th will he still check into his new barracks for A school before he is allowed liberty or leave or will he do that after leave?  Is his leave until Jan. 6 or would he have to report back earlier than that? I would like to fly him home with me from the 29th or 30th until Jan. 6 - Is that feasible? Thanks so much for responding to all our questions!

If they are required to check back in on the 6th, be certain they are back on the 5th. Flight delays are not an excused absence, even if it is not their fault.
Official message from the CO is on page three of this discussion. 21st to the 6th. Don't book before 1000 in the morning on the 21st. They have to check in 2200 on the 6th, but personally, I'd not cut it close, have them back on the 5th. Weather is iffy that time of year, a storm anywhere in the US can tangle up Ohare.
Keep in mind the buses are leaving from the main side, NOT The RTC (bootcamp side).

Also write to your recruits about any leave plans as they will have to give information to RTC.

Also recruits don't have access to ITT or any other means to get tickets home on leave.

My son is in GL for A School. (PIR 10-5) He would like to come home for the holidays. Is he allowed to utilize the MWR bus to the airport?  Thanks for any help on this.  The taxi rates we have been checking are outrageous!

The busses are available to everybody.  They just need to purchase a ticket from MWR.  The bus is much cheaper and easier.  Busses will be departing from the Main Side (TSC), not RTC.
