Staying at the Ramada...has anyone taken a train into Chicago for the day?

My older daughter and I are going to arrive 2 days before PIR. We wanted to take a train into downtown Chicago. Has anyone done this and if so....how long was the train ride? Price? Thanks in advance:)

Yes we took the train fromGreat Lakes to Chicago. It is a great ride and we enjoyed our time together. The train ride is about 2 hours each direction but we had so much to talk to our son about that the time flew by. We took a double-decker bus ride (this was in Sept and the weather was great) to Navy Pier and sightseeing. It stops frequently so you can get off and on as you want. Just make sure you get back to the train before the last one to Great Lakes leaves and leave enough time to get your sailor back to base in time. We are going back for my second son's PIR and plan to do the same thing all over again. We also took our rental car to the museum (not on the train line) and really enjoyed it too. You can get discount tix on base.
Thank you for the great information. Do the double decker buses take you to the magnificent mile or downtown Chicago? (they could be in the same location for all I know:) Is the train station close to the Ramada? I am actually thinking of taking the train when we get there the Thursday before PIR. My daughter that is graduating does not like shopping. The daughter I am going to Chicago with, loves to shop. My soon to be sailor daughter will probably want to be away from people for her time away from base. That's why we were going early to see Chicago. Maybe she will surprise us and want to go? I would be so proud to walk around with her in her Navy uniform! Can I pick your brain again when we get closer to PIR 4/02? Thank you for answering! When is your second son's PIR?
Petra was in chicago first part of February she took the train then, she took this picture then from John Hancok building, the picture is the Navy pier We are planing on taking the train from the Amtrak station to the Lodge. I was able to get the schedule by googleing Chicago train, it is called the Metra. I also found a place on the Metra train sight that I was able to enter an address to see what train to catch and schedules. We will be there for my sons PIR 3/26. My son is in ship 6 division 919. I hope this is of some help to you.
