Hello everyone! It's been awhile since I was last on here but I have a question to ask... does my son receive leave automatically because of his father suddenly passing while he was on an underway? He was told the news from the Navy about his dad and they give him an option to either leave or stay till over... he decided to stay and finish what he started! Sad he found out the way he did but his wife went through all the correct channels in order for him to receive the news! I pray for my son.... grieving the loss of his dad while underwater! I'm sad for him!

Victoria - first off let me say I am so sorry for your loss.  It's good that your DIL went through the proper channels, ie the Red Cross and they should help with arrangements with his command to get him home.

Things are a little different right now with COVID and the fact that he's on a sub makes it a little more difficult but he should be allowed leave time.  Hopefully you all will hear something soon.

Keeping your family in my prayers.

My condolences. That is a hard thing.

I don't think there is anything automatic, particularly while on an underway. They will probably allow him leave when they get back.
When my mother passed away, my son was on deployment somewhere in the western Pacific. (The "7th fleet area of operations" covers about 1/5th of the planet.)  I was impressed with the sensitivity with which they handled the matter. When they got the message, they took him off watch to tell him. He was even able to call home, through a process about which I did not inquire. He didn't come home, though.

Getting your off of the sub and on the way home is a major undertaking at the best of times, and they are very mission-sensitive. It is part of the commitment it takes to be a submariner.

It is all going to seem unreal to him. My son said something about that. Maybe there is a way to help him with that when he does get leave.
