Hi Mary Sue, I know for me My grandson is Little and My Son and him are very close. we tried to explain to him as best we could, Now her being 11 she may understand a little more than a 4 yr. old but still it may be very hard for her since they are very close. But I tell you he didnt quite understand and was upset with my Son for a long while he just didnt understand being so little but second time around we took him to airport we explained bud was going on a big ship. so really it all depends as she is getting older she will come to realize what good her big brother is doing. maybe you and her can start researching what big brother is going to be doing as far as rate/job and learn together. that would also be a good project for her. I'm sure She will understand and will be very Proud. but do let her know that the communication part will be kind of silent for a while so she can understand that he isnt neglecting her/family in any way. maybe you and her and him can read sites together so she knows what brother will be up against. of course all positive. I can put some sites down or maybe even the library may have books.
I do believe staying busy will help for you and her Ma'am it will be hard for the first couple of weeks because of the No Communication, but please no you will not be alone on this site and the first couple of weeks may be very overwhelming with emotions, so if there is anything I can do please reach out. You have a Great support system here with many Mothers going thru the same and they are so great at sharing. One thing I would like to share with you and your Son is the PFA please have him to read and get started on practicing the Prone float, and the run. also they have to do so many push ups, situps ect in 2 min. this is a must to pass and will be tested on run on the 5th business day of arrival.
See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. Those who pass continue with BC. Those who do not pass are moved to FIT and will be retested in 48 hours and must pass in order to continue at the RTC. See Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) and Fitness Improvement Training ... for more information.
my girls were 15 and 9 when DS left for boot camp (14 and 8 when he did MEPS). The little one was incredibly close to her brother (he was 15 when she was born) and she really misses him. We talked to her about serving the country and read her books about sailors and the Navy. She wrote to him during bootcamp (and he wrote to her). It's actually been harder for her once he left for his first duty station because he's overseas and she hasn't seen him since Apr '16 and it'll be at least until next April before he has leave at home - and he's not as good at writing to her.
Hi NavyMum Congratulations to your Sailor! being overseas is alot harder to write and especially on what kind of ship they are on is even worse. I cant wait to see her eyes once your Sailor gets to come home, My little grandson the picture cant even begin to describe his emotions and facial expression. Best wishes to your Sailor! My Son was on a Carrier he was able to messenger me most the time but as far as letters it would have taken to long. Have a Great Day!
