My son went to MEPS last week and took his Asvab and passed his physical and scored a 71 on his test but at the end of the day was told "Thanks - we have no jobs for you" I called his recruiter today and was told that all the jobs for the month of January have been taken but there should be more coming in February for him. Is this normal? I was also told there are more people joining than getting out so things are limited.

I want to believe this recruiter but still not really sure about what I was told. My son was extremely disappointed last week. He is still a HS Senior due to graduate this May. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. I would appreciate it. Thanks

There are more applicants than jobs available right now. His score is good, especially considering he is still in high school. Talk to the recruiter and find out what jobs he is qualified for (independent of whether there is an opening or not). The sites below will give you a better idea scores requirements - note the composite scores also. Your recruiter is being straight forward. Don't give up. Keep at it. Your son has time. If he does get in now, start taking college courses at a community college and try again. Good luck.

It does seem the Navy is over staffed. My son had tod me this. (he is in the Navy) and I heard about it on either Fox or CNN News.

It depends upon the day. A lot of jobs open the 31st and 1st. A job could be not available, n the next 10 mins, a job could be available. Because anyone could get injured, or in legal trouble, which will stop them from going to bootcamp, and opening up their job. Its like rolling dice. Its all about luck. I saw someone get in with  36, so it doesnt depend upon how low ur score is. It depends if they have anything open for you. We live in a bad economy, so its hard to get a job, and the navy is packed. I have went up toeps 3 times, and told me they had no jobs. Its up to the the Co, if they need ur son/daughter. Sometimes they only accept ppl that havent graduated school, or depends upon ur race, cus they try to make everything balanced. You shouldnt worry about it though. A job will open up. I tried for 7 months, and finally got a job 2 weeks ago. Just have patience and faith.

Thanks. He actually got a call yesterday afternoon and went back to MEPS this morning and signed a contract and got sworn in. He leaves for Boot Camp on Oct 5th since they have to coordinate Boot Camp with Sub School and then A school. He will be on a submarine. He is very excited!  The recruiting station here will be working with him twice a week until he leaves in October working on basics and PT. They want him "ahead" of the rest of the recruits at RTC.

Congrats on getting your job and best of luck to you.

I have a son in the navy actually his in A school now he also is going to be in a submarine . I wanted to tell you about your son's box with his jeans rolled -up my son also his jeans came rolled up in the box I think they give them time limit to take their civilian clothes off .jjuarez

Per the rolled up jeans -

Here is the comment on NavyDEP.com

"Lastly, tell your parents if your pants legs are rolled up when they get the box, it's because you didn't have time to roll them down after getting measured for boots. I thought for sure that my son had been in trouble for wearing baggy jeans. One final thing, make sure your boots fit. We've heard of Recruits suffering the entire time because they didn't want to speak up. Not good!"

if you go to meps within the first two weeks there is alot of jobs open. i went the first week and i made a 88 on my asvab and i was offered 11 different jobs all awesome except 2
