Hi, when sailors finish a school and take a leave before their first duty station, do they have to get on a computer themselves and make their own flight reservations or is there someone at a school that helps them with that? I know they have to pay, just didn’t know if the navy helps get them a flight or they do it all on their own. Thank you!
TXnavymom - I wish I had an answer to your question. My son's situation was a bit different. Is your son flying directly from A school to his duty station or is he taking leave and flying home to see you all first?
If it is the latter, then I think that either he or you will need to make the flight reservation. He should be able to ask his SLPO for some clarifications. I do not believe there is anyone at the school that will actually serve as a travel agent so to speak but there are some military services. I believe that with Delta there is a special like to call about military discounts.
Hi TXnavymom and welcome to our group. We are glad that you are here. It depends on a few things, where will he be going to A school? Mine went to his A school first and then had to wait a bit before he could come home. At his A school he had to class up before he could get liberty to leave the base.
I just saw Chipmunk's note and if your Sailor has already had PIR. Congratulations to you and your loved one!!! :)
Your loved one will be able to make his own reservations or you can help. I did it for mine at first and then he started making his reservations on his own. No mam they will do it all on their own.
If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask and congrats again on your loved one becoming a Sailor!!!
Most of the time they have to book it themselves. They will meet with Travel staff to arrange their transportation to their duty station and if your sailor asks they can help them make the arrangements if necessary. However YOUR sailor has to ask. They can ask at the school from anyone of their command as well. Let them figure this out. They will have lots of different travel scenarios so they are the best able to ask for direction. If they want you to Price shop for them that's fine but as for how they need to make the arrangements... They are the best ones to ask their command. The more they learn to ask now the fewer issues will arise later... Like thinking they have to get rid of all their household goods before traveling overseas for a duty assignment... (Long, sad, expensive story!!)
Home leave "en route" after A school and before the first duty station is simple, they work with the travel office, aka SATO, who set up their official travel. Basically someone "at school" helps them get it done. They'll be instructed how to fill out the leave request, how to submit it, and how to arrange travel. Do NOT jump the gun and buy tickets for them, the Navy gets a bulk discount. They can travel with extra bags on orders, so that's a plus.
BTW, military discounts are usually not for those sailors traveling in conjunction with orders. They're not great anyway.
Thank you! My son comes home the day after tomorrow so he’s been working on all that today. He called this morning and told us to go ahead and get him a ticket so we did. Hopefully he didn’t misunderstand and the navy already has one reserved. it would have been nice to get a discount!
Thank you. I thought that was the name but was unsure. My Sailor told me to back off and he'd get it worked out and if not he'd call and let us know what he needed. It was hard because I really wanted him home most of all! He got it managed and has handled all his travel arrangements since.
Yes, I look forward to him getting all this under his belt. He’s not the type to be aware of what he’s supposed to do (my oldest would have this all taken care of, each kid is so different) so the Navy will grow him up in this way. Like you said, I just want him home. Thank you for your help!
What is SATO? I went to the site, but does it stand for anything? Asked my son if he’d heard of SATO and he said “what’s that?”
SATO is the name of the Government Travel Agency (https://www.cwtsatotravel.com/home.html) All Official Government travel must be booked through them.
Any time you book travel for your sailor make sure it is 100% Changeable/transferable/refundable since their orders can and do change on a dime!
Also If your sailor does not yet have their passport it's a good idea to get one while he;s home (Get yours too!) I'll explain more on the Main pages.
