Unanswered questions about Liberty etc... please help!
So I have read through as many group discussions as I can and still have some unanswered questions... please help!
1. I will not be renting a car for fear of getting lost.. Im really bad with areas I am not familiar with. Can sailors leave the base after liberty on Saturday and Sunday by themselves in a taxi or does a family member/friend have to pick them up?
2. Are shuttles available only for PIR or during the whole weekend?
3. My sailor is attending A school @ Great Lakes. On friday night when he goes back to check in can he take back his cell phone, labtop etc?
4. Does anyone have an idea about how much a taxi is from the O'hara airport to the base? I just want to get an idea of how much I will be spending on taxis...
These are the ones I can think of from the top of my head. I appreciate anyones response...!!! THANKS!!!

They can leave base without a parent or other, they may need a liberty buddy, but I am sure that isnt a problem.
Right next door to the base is the train station, its pretty cheap to take the train into Chicago, and lots of new sailors will be doing that. Its easy and a fun way to spend the day and you dont need a car.

3. Once they have checked into their A school barracks on Friday, they CAN take their cellphone, laptop back with them. They will be on the NTC side of the base then. They only can't take stuff back if they are going back to RTC side and are flying out the next day.
You can ask RTC directly about leaving for liberty by themselves. I'd say no, because they all must have a liberty buddy or two. You may end up with a couple extra "kids" that weekend.

I thought I knew all the answers to your questions, however, my memory may be slightly off, but I'll give you the answers as I recall.
1.Sailors either had to leave with two liberty buddies, or else, we had to get a pass to come on base, then go and sign him out, and back in again. This meant his walking to the gate, then we waited to apply for a visitors day pass, then we drove to his ship, then we waited in line while he asked permission to come aboard, then we waited in line to sign him out. We had to do all that again when we brought him back.
2.I would think shuttles are only for PIR, but I'd suggest calling the hotel you are staying at. The Navy Lodge where we stayed had no shuttle at all.
3.I believe my son took his cell phone back with him immediately after PIR. I could be mis-remembering though and perhaps he had to wait until after we picked him up late friday after he checked in to his new ship.
4.I'm thinking it was $60 to O'hare one way. Somewhere on this site is Sarge's taxi service phone number. I would suggest using him. However, again, depending on where you are staying, there is a train that can drop you off across the street from Boot Camp. You'd have to arrange a cab once there though.
FWIW, I'd suggest renting the car. You can get a GPS for a daily rental fee(I thought it was ridiculously high though) or bring one with you. If your sailor is staying in GL, you're going to want it as we were running back and forth to base to pick him up and drop him off. Anyone here can tell you approximately when your sailor can leave base, but in truth, there are so many different variables. The ship he is assigned to, may have muster in the morning, or they may not. Their division may have gotten in trouble before graduation and I've heard of this affecting when they could leave.
You must expect to be patient while waiting around for your sailor. Even when he is available to leave his ship, it will still take him 20 minutes to walk to the main gate.
He will be used to following orders. You won't be.
Also understand, the rules there seem to be constantly changing.
P.S. You may want to check into flying into Milwaukee. It's a bit further, but may save you money. It's also a much easier drive.

Call the car rental places. I hear they are giving much better deals over the phone instead on booking online. Let them know what your up there for.

Better yet, park in the train station parking lot across the road for $2 and walk in and save most of the hassle. You can even drive around the long line to get in. You will get in much quicker.
P.S. we were charged $11 per day to rent a GPS. I could have bought one for not much more.
