My son is in A school right now at Great Lakes. We live close enough that he's been able to come home for a few weekends and I noticed he wasn't taking things back with him. He finally said that he just doesn't have room. He has a closet for his stuff and it's not very big. He has his video games and a TV, cell phone, some civilian cloths, and a few other personal things. That's it. He said he really doesn't need anything there. He will be getting a laptop soon.
As soon as your son reaches Phase 2 he will be able to wear his cloths again. I sent Adam his cell phone as soon as he got his new address and it was fine.
When my son got to A school I sent him a bunch of his clothes, but he found that he'd "buffed up" so much in boot camp that none of his clothes (pants especially) fit him anymore. He'd lost 2-3" in the waist! So have your son check his measurements before you send him too much stuff. T-shirts should be OK but check on the Levi's etc.
He gained weight but it wasn't muscle - he said bootcamp was easy and didn't have enough physical activity. He said the run was too easy and they only got to swim one day. I think now that he's out he'll actually exercise more - some guys gave him their numbers to play football and when we passed a field there were two teams out playing soccer.
My son gained weight and his pants were tight. He never ate 3 squares before, so to go and change his eating habits made a difference. He didn't start working out again until he became a night student. They have PT a couple times a week now.
You can meet him at the airport to see him off. Often flights are delayed or aren't scheduled to depart for hours=more time with your new Sailor!!
Take him his cell phone and laptop and a few civvies (to wear once he classes up) put them in a plain black back pack...they're sold at the NEX at PIR for about 35 bucks I think...or you probably can get one at Walmart or Target
Yeah - wait until he tells you to send him stuff. Or find out next time you talk to him if they've told him anything. Have you been able to talk to him yet? I only got 2 calls from Adam during boot camp. One 6 weeks in, and one the day he called to tell me he was a United States Sailor. That is THE best call in the world. You can hear their excitement/relief through the phone. It's amazing.
Because he's grad n go how much time will you have with him?
